Microsoft's Surface Duo will have a "world-class camera", says Panos Panay

He didn't reveal much else, but there's a Microsoft patent on camera designs for thin phones.

Don't they own the real Nokia? I'm confident it will be good because my $30 Microsoft Lumia 640 took excellent photos for its price.

I'm willing to get this if it's under a grand.

Whackcar, 26 Oct 2019Since it's Microsoft, i actually have some faith in them to... moreThose great Lumia cameras were based on Nokia's Pureview designs, which Microsoft inherited when they bought Nokia's smartphone division. Nokia, when they still existed in their original form, was years ahead of everyone else on smartphone camera technology. Now that Microsoft has erased the original Nokia smartphone business from existence, there's no reason to assume they still have the capacities that led to the Nokia cameras. Maybe they can make a good camera for the Surface Duo, but it won't be because of no longer existent designs and engineers from Nokia.

[deleted post]I'm sorry, but such a good and practical idea would *gasp* make a better product. Marketing won't let that happen. A device must always be half-baked somehow, so that you can sell a better product later.

Since it's Microsoft, i actually have some faith in them to deliver. Their last flagships, the Lumia 950/950XL were excellent in both photography & videography. If Microsoft could cook up something similar (but updated) for the Surface Duo, then they'll certainly deliver on that front.

Separate some of the lens assembly and stick it in the other half. Tightly align them with powerful magnets when closed (shooting from the inside clamshell 1 through the lens in clamshell 2), protect them with irises when the flip is opened.

You are now officially banned from designing any mass market product. Or from applying for any designer job.

Will it be a triple camera setup? I doubt

                        Actually, there's an easier solution:
With so much bezels, one screen could have an indentation while the other has a thick camera module that fits inside that space.
May not look pretty, but it would, theoretically fit a larger sensor as thick as both screens.
