Sony unveils 2x2 on-chip lens tech for Quad Bayer sensors, which promises better AF performance

11 December 2019
Traditionally, each pixel has its own micro lens in front of it (even on Quad Bayer sensors). Sony made larger lenses that cover four pixels.

There may be some variation in terms of focal length of the two. In fact looking at the vehicle, like you said is bigger and probably closer to the sony lens, this make the sony require to move its focus distance more (assuming the background is the same distance from the sensor between both setup). But if sony lens is wider, then the above will be offset off.

In whichever case, the Sony is showed its superiority with almost no focus hunting.

The moving subject got much closer to the lens on second video, either they'v zoomed on subject before it move or they made the lens more closer, any basic photographer knows that the closer the subject the faster the focus, which's very obvious on Sony sensor!

It's surprising that the Quad Pixel technology can output high resolution photos according to Sony. With a dual pixel sensor it's apparently not possible due to the mircolens.

Wow, that's not a dual pixel sensor, but a Quad Pixel sensor! As far as I remember Canon already worked on developing a Quad Pixel sensor in the past. This won't just improve autofocus, it will also improve portrait mode for small distances!

I know a photographer that got very angry when he found out the unit with exmor shows better results. And difference is not that small.
Samsung would get higher dxo score if the european units are exmor.

Apple, LG, Google, HTC, OnePlus, Xiaomi flagships all use Exmor for main camera despite Isocell being cheaper.
                    What a coincidence ....

Samsung is not new in this territory, they used to make pocket and apsc cameras.

                      Supreme tech!

Recently I have take a photo which the tiny fruit hang on the tree, I couldn't focus on the tiny fruit, I have try many times with my China phone but fail. I think this 2x2 OCL technology would be a solution on mapping/refine the focus, so even a tiny fruit hanging on the tree is still can be focused.

I am guessing that we're probably still a long way from improving microlens design, substantially, where improvement in low light and other things are grossly improved.

Or when one company has the superior brand image to its rivals, or most of the competitors are new to the market and haven't been able to expand their shares. I've yet to see a single evidence that Samsung's mobile phone sensors deliver worse image quality than Sony's counterparts when they share the identical specs.

When moving from 48 to 108mp sensor tech didn't change. 0.8um pixels all the way. Bu this will improve auto focus a lot for non dual pixel sensors. Hope this arrives in an Xperia soon.

                                        Sony makes a new sensor.
Samsung brings their lower quality version.

If Sony was the only suppier, even low end phones would be taking better photos.
Chinese companies will choose imx686 over the isocell version for better phones, then leave isocell for lower tier devices.
Same will happen if Sony decides to make 108MP.
