2019 Winners and Losers: Sony

30 December 2019
Only a few Xperia phones came out this year and even fewer managed to wow us, but the company clearly hasn't lost its taste for innovation.

Xperia 5 is a winner cause of 68mm width? For me it's the biggest looser from this brand, cause they try to sell it as a next-gen compact. Yeah, 158mm compact phone...

I hope my XZ1c will survive for a few years until clamshell-style folded phones become good.

Can we even talk about winners when talking about Sony?
    Honestly.

Whackcar, 30 Dec 2019What doesn't sell cannot be a winner. So all of the above d... moreexactly. insisting on features nobody wanted while the competition is enjoying good sales with the features that sell. i am not saying the 4K screen, the tall aspect ratio, and bezels are not wanted; i mean those actually are good features but not something the average consumer wants. the android handset market is very dynamic now owing to the number of competitors, and to survive they have to follow the trend for the meantime and not push for their own- you only enjoy setting trends when you are at the top, and they are not anymore. i also wanted for sony mobile to survive. my first smartphones were from sony- from the symbian powered xperia p1 and satio to the windows mobile powered original xperia 1. when i switched to android the xperia 101, xperia play, xperia active were my phones before moving to the samsung note series.

Anonymous, 30 Dec 2019Why do tech sites keep ignoring all xperia 1080p or above h... moreBecause it's locked at 60Hz...You answered your own question. The fact that the panel is capable of 120Hz(and probably even more) makes no difference if the user can't use it.
As far as camera quality goes, no, xa1/xa2 don't produce better photos than 10+ at any situation. XA1 is average at best in practical camera performance, not talking about manual mode and lab tests, they are pointless. XZP still takes better photos than xa1/xa2.
Sony's issue is and always was pricing and marketing, the phones aren't bad at all just like any other tech they make. Their DSLRs are cutting edge tech, not cheap, but are competitive and offer alot for the money, hence they sell. Their headphones are more expencive than most other, but they are still competitive and sell. So Sony seems to adapt very well and pay attention to pricing and competition in all other markets apart from mobile division, for some reason.
The fact that their phones drop in price very fast(specially used market) is a win for me, because I restrain from buying new tech at stores, at that point you can get the previous top end model for dirt cheap, sometimes even unused, boxed with warranty. I'll take that deal over any brand new Xiaomi/Oppo/OnePlus and such. Currently I'm waiting for new models to come out and I'll start looking and the 5 which I really like. It's not really a compact I wished for, but it's close.

The 5 and 1 are easily winners, but the midrangers… I think they could have been better.

Coming from an XZ Premium, the 1 is refreshing, bringing a lot of new things.
And to those people complaining about the price against a Note 10+, these phones are in the same league, the best each manufacturer has to offer. It's just that they're different.

Xperia 5 is the winner and the other are losers, big price and low-budget specifications

What doesn't sell cannot be a winner. So all of the above devices are losers. Even Xperia 1 wasn't commercially successful... Sony needs to wake up before they shut down.

And before Sony fans attack me. This isn't about good or bad. Any company cannot survive without sales. Companies like Sony, LG & HTC need to rethink their marketing strategy if they intend to survive. As someone who have used their phones, I know their true potential & I want them to survive. But at the end of the day, their fates depend on their own efforts.

                Winners: Sony competitors.
                Losers: Well..

The Sony flagships in my country costs the same as a Note 10 or 10+. And if I want something less expensive I can easily go for a Xiaomi or One Plus.
The sony mid-range or low-end phones are really a joke. Average batteries, very bad processors and high prices (at least at launch date).

Sony should up their game or leave the smartphone market if they can't. It's easy as that.

Why do tech sites keep ignoring all xperia 1080p or above have 120Hz?
Locked to 60 by software does not turn it into cheap 60Hz screen.

10+ is not winner .... It takes worse photos than xa1/xa2 and has weaker battery life.

All of them have ugly boring User Interface.
Ugly ui, ugly icons, ugly shape, ugly design.

"Sony Ericsson" was much much better than the "current sony".

"The competition was pushing forward with 90Hz screens..."

I rather wish that is just a gaming smartphone-only feature. I did tried out 90Hz screen, cannot see any reason for it apart from mobile gaming. All I ever saw was faster battery drain.

Each phone has a crap battery. Jesus.
