This dedicated macro (usually 2MP) is just another excuse to charge more.

            That's super ugly.

IMX686, 20MP UWA snapper... GSMArena, are you implying that Huawei will DOWNGRADE their sensors from Mate 30 Pro for their current most anticipated flagship??? And if P40 would have a 20MP sensor for the UWA lens, then why would it have a dedicated macro camera on top of it? P30 Pro had the same UWA lens that could be also used to shoot macro photos, so putting another camera just so that users can use it to shoot macro photos would be an absolutely idiotic move.

Anonymous, 26 Dec 2019And where's your proof?? Leica definitely helped Huawei to design the lenses, but Leica themselves did NOT manufacture them.

Shui8, 26 Dec 2019IMX686 used is just a rumor. Its a downgrade from current P... moreI don't know, for me the photos from the current P/Mate series feel more like they have been taken by a great smartphone camera rather than a miniaturised Leica camera. When P9 first came out, it was screaming "digital camera" - The colour reproduction, how it adjusted gamma & contrast, or even the way it applied sharpening and noise reduction were so different from any other phones released at the same time. The dedicated monochrome sensor was also still there for native B&W photos, and while it sucked for video recording, it certainly felt like it had a quality that had been carried over from Leica's dedicated cameras.

It all started to change with P20 Pro, though. Although the image quality was certainly better than Mate 10 series in many aspects, Huawei drifted away from Leica's colour palette and started seeking for more eye-pleasing photos to appeal to the lowest common denominator. Mate 20 Pro was a nice step up from P20 Pro and its photos did look more natural refined than the predecessor but it lost a monochrome sensor which was their main selling point. Then they decided to throw away everything with P30 series by switching to unconventional RYYB CFA. Having used Mate 10 Pro before and using P30 as my daily driver along with S10, I must say I prefer the colours on Mate 10 Pro slightly more than both of my current phones, and while I do enjoy its ability to be able to shoot in multiple focal lengths, it's simply not as fun to take photos with telephoto and UWA lenses as taking with a 20MP monochrome sensor, especially in low light.

Mate 30 Pro ironed out most of issues that P30 Pro had and drastically improved the detail retention, making it one of the best device to capture textures across all lighting conditions... but honestly its 1/1.7" sensor getting old, in addition to that RYYB filter still overrepresents green in shadow areas. It's time for Huawei to move onto theoretically more colour accurate RGBW sensor - a larger one, too - and hopefully they will bring back the good-old pre-P20 colour palette onto P40 series.

Those custom sensors are in every brand in the world. Even cheap Indian phones.

I don't think they will have a separate macro since they're already pretty good in ultrawide. It will probably be a intermediate zoom between the primary and whatever the periscope zoom is.

                        https://www.zdnet.com/article/7-things-to-know-about-leica-and-huaweis-partnership/

" They're not glass. It's true. Leica may be known for its glass lenses in far more expensive cameras, but the lenses used on Huawei smartphones are plastic. When asked about any challenges or obstacles a plastic lens presents, Leica officials equated the plastic used for Huawei lenses to just another form of glass. Albeit a far less expensive form of glass.

NEITHER LEICA OR HUAWEI MANUFACTURE THE LENSES. Instead, a third-party manufacturer in Asia mass-produces the lenses to the specifications agreed upon by Leica and Huawei. It's not surprising that Leica doesn't produce the lenses, as its campus just isn't built for mass production of smartphone components. Huawei has sold six million P20 series phones, with two to three lenses on each phone -- the Leica campus isn't designed for that size of production undertaking."

Anonymous, 26 Dec 2019And where's your proof?? Theres no proof, mate. Leica indeed doesnt make small lenses for a smartphone. Lens on Huawei phones are from the local company, but certified by Leica (still a high quality lens). Leica also involve heavily on its image processing, therefore got their signature look. Sensor are custom-made by Sony, exclusive just for Huawei.

Leica a big company anyway, they will not easily sacrifice its naming for money just to put a branding on Huawei's phone. A lot of people here still confusing about it.

IMX686 used is just a rumor. Its a downgrade from current P30 IMX600 actually. I bet its gonna use again custom sensor from Sony that at least has 1/1.5" sensor size.

Love their collaboration with Leica. The image output got that Leica signature. Some call it overprocessed, different color pallete, etc. But that is just the Leica way, image processing tuned by them anyway. If someone want the best natural looking smartphone camera, its Iphone 11 Pro. But its not my preference. Film-like Leica camera all the way for me.
