Anonymous, 03 Jan 2020What's wrong with these phones? Both offers great phones.Actually blame the carriers for supporting both brands too much...btw only the Samsung S and Note series sell well in the US. Models like the M10s and A50 don't sell well, shame.

If you go play some chess with garry kasparov you almost know what the outcome is going to be for you... better not to play when you don't have to.

              Isn't this obvious?

              1. Samsung and Apple are putting efforts into marketing their products, even inside carrier stores. Obviously consumers are more aware of them.
              2. Samsung and Apple phones available in the US are their flagships. When a consumer are buying a phone with a carrier installment plan or contract, obviously they will take advantage of the discount for the expensive flagships, and in the US they are either Samsung or Apple. I mean why buy a cheap phone when you're signing up with the carrier?

No conspiracy here. Simple economic behavior of consumers.

In contrast, people in regions like SE Asia mostly buy their phones in full, no installment/contract. Thus the popular ones are Oppo, Xiaomi, and Samsung's lower Galaxy A phones.

American and European carriers... The most boring places to buy a phone.

Aadrian , 03 Jan 2020So it is basically a boring smartphone country. If you can afford not to have chinese adware/spyware running in your phone, maybe that's a good thing.

Well, I live in Europe and I think that apart from Samsung or Apple is not really something interesting.
Maybe One Plus, but One Plus is just making one type of phone per year. No compact variant, which is sad. I don't understand why people want this big screen phones. Everything that is above 6" and 160 g is just useless.

If you can't do better phone and tech in common (for example huawei 5g technologies not just inside the phones but as cellular equipment provider where are bigger billions $$ is years ahead of all rest World high tech companies doing 5g as well) ban them. Simple US tool.

ofcourse they are. they banned the best phones huawei. zte are not so great, but banned them as well back in the day. that's why samsung in on apple's path. not to lose US market. if they do real innovation as huawei did, US will ban them as well. What they can do is make apple and pixel match product, or 2% better max. huawei does 10% better and that's a problem you see.. no one is bigger than USA :) (in their minds at least)

Makes sense that the top seller was the iPhone 11, in Q3 the iPhone 11 took just 10 days to make it into the Top 5 bestsellers worldwide for the the whole quarter.

                                Great job by Apple.

Chinese phones don't sell in the US, we get it.. So now can the US government leave the Chinese company to do their thing? What are they scared of? If you can't beat them join them

A great report. Good journalism. I think it's important that GSM arena and other major specialist phone journalists cover more about this principle. This might help consumers, especially of the increasingly isolated US market to become more aware of other options. And potentially save the consumer hundreds of USD. And still have a better phone that what US carriers are currently offering. It is essential that the consumers of the US market begin to win against the carriers and have a much better option of much better phones and cheaper than what US carriers are forcing consumers. The carriers are deliberately severely limiting the consumer. The consumers in America are actually losing against the carriers.

Surely Americans deserve better phones? Because quite simply. American carriers are limiting Americans to the point where the best phones are available from China. And the global market. The American consumer is missing out in a big way.

                                    1. Consumer is losing a lot of money.
                                    2. Consumer thinks they have the best phone. When actually much better phones are availabile outside of America.

If the US want to have the lesser phones for rip off prices... Fine. The rest of the world will just have to have the best.

America returning to a developing country from developed status.
