But hey, if they don't then i'll be pleasantly surprised.

Sony has nothing to offer beyond the IMX 686.
I wonder what the p40 pro will sport.

Even Redmi K30, a sub 300 dollar device has the IMX 686.
HMX sensor inside s11 is the next version for the one in MI note 10.

If you think that the HMX in Mi Note 10 is the same on the upcoming S20 (Ultra) then you're already wrong. Again, no test results (sample shots) available nor spec sheets yet for an "informed" comparison. Don't think way ahead of yourself. Think like an objective person, not a lamb that were constantly milked by a certain company.

Well it already exists. That should get you out of your bubble.
HMX sensor is untested?
So is the IMX 686.
We know even 400 dollar device will be employing that sensor.
It can't compete with Samsung HMX series. We have already seen the results and potential of the HMX series on Mi note 10.

I just say let's wait until its release and let us see for ourselves, there's no need to look down on a sensor comparing it to a non-existent one because that argument is just baseless for the time being.

Deep down you know, IMX 686 is simply weak.
The Omnivison sensor announced recently looks Promising though and can compete with the HMX sensor

Anonymous, 07 Jan 2020Nah, IMX 686 will be in all 400 plus dollar flasghips.
HMX... moreThe main problem with Quad-bayer sensors (or any iterations thereafter) is slow AF. None of them have dual-phase detect (dual-pixel) AF up until the Sony's IMX686's own 2x2OCL technology. IF you think that HMX is better, then start identifying what's the main problem the technology and which research facility is taking the initiative to solve that specific problem and bring that tech to the masses.
IF you want analogy of how Samsung does with their HMX, you can always relate it to a processor by upping the number of cores, shrinking them as small as they can but not actually fixing the per-core scheduling problems.
