Anonymous, 07 Jan 2020Rip battery on s20e/s20If you can choose the refresh rate like you choose the resolution, then it's not a problem.
Also we don't know if they will change the technology on the battery, they could come up with new things, and maybe the phone will not run always on 120 hz, maybe only when the content runs at 120hz

So no impact on normal user, but gaming will take a minor hit.

More Hz is always better and while it may seem like a foolish pursuit after "moar numbers" the hard facts are that higher refresh rates are easily noticeable even in the neighborhood of 150-200Hz. Some studies suggest this is the upper limit for determining "smoothness" of the image and anything else is very difficult to distinguish.

This however is not the limit. Eyesight works completely different to how computer screen works and depending on what your measuring you may even need to go up to 1000Hz to get to the point where it sorta matches real life.

Colour changes can happen at low frequencies without anything feeling choppy, big contrast changes can be noticed even at current bleeding edge 144Hz changes, flickering is visible below 500Hz and there are motion artifacts you'd need 1000Hz to eliminate.

Human eye doesn't see in a fixed refresh rate. It's a very complex mechanism that operates on a vastly different principles than computer displays but it can be fooled with high enough refresh rates and it just happens that around 1000Hz the illusion becomes extremely difficult to distinguish from reality but even then there are things like single light pulses in the absence of other light sources which can theoretically be registered at infinitely high frequencies - if a light ray hits your cones (the photoreceptor cells) it'll be registered no matter how brief the interaction was.

So in the case of refresh rate more really is always better, all other things being equal. There however is a nice middle ground in 120Hz panels because 1000Hz displays are not only not feasible yet but would also use too much battery. Technology was always about the trade-offs like battery life, cost, processing power etc and this is no different. However I hope 120Hz becomes the standard soon as it really is a nice middleground where going above it the returns start to diminish whereas 60Hz and especially 30Hz are noticeably very choppy and nowhere near the sweet spot of battery life vs. smoothness like 120Hz is.

          120 hz :D

Why not make this as G20 like gaming phone. Tbh all flagship phones should be renamed to a gaming phones as thats what they are all made for when adding that 90Hz and 120Hz and so on to there screens. All these high score benchmark and so on is only needed for gaming device. Running apps that are not for gaming dont need so hard core hardware. Same with cameras they dont need these so high end cpu/gpu

Flagship phones use to be a business man phones for the quality and long lasting features. Now they are all gaming oriented products for kids.

Anonymous, 07 Jan 2020Rip battery on s20e/s20Did you even read the article? There is a toggle in One UI to change between 60 Hz and 120 Hz. If you don't like the high refresh rate, just stick with 60 Hz.

What Samsung wants is to match the naming scheme of the S series with the A series, where there's an A1x, A2x, A5x etc. By doing an S20 as the ultra premium model, Samsung then can do an S1x (just like they are doing with the A series now) for the non-ultra premium flagship without hurting the higher price tag of the S2x.

The mate 30 pro does not have a high refresh rate display.

Most useless features in the history of .... ever.
Phones get too much of everything but in the end they are just tiny devices with limited functionality.

To 90% of the people they are glorified message boxes. Add a decent camera + battery life and you are a golden. Everything else is kind of a waste at this point.

IMO best phone is DSLR photo quality (or as close as possible), lots of ram/storage to avoid slowdowns + swappable battery and/or since those went out of style, a big fat one instead.

Literally those 3, everything else is either irrelevant or uninteresting to 95% of the people.

Again camera+battery+ram/storage. Maximize those three and you have the perfect personal communicator (not really phones, they are mostly mused for texting at this point)...

Misfit2Fields, 07 Jan 2020It is rumored that the smallest battery is 4000 mAh. Which would be great but at 120Hz the battery life probably won't be better than S10e's, which would be a shame.

I do not say that the higher Hz display is ugly/bad, it is good indeed. At least for me, that tech. is not so important and may increase the customers' price. The ordinary display (i.e normal Hz, 1080p) is still the best for the price and usage.

I am waiting for under display front camera tech. so that the phone has IP rating still.
