OnePlus Concept One introduced with a disappearing camera

08 January 2020
This feature acts as an ND-filter for taking photos in bright sunlight and makes a wonderful tool for mobile photography.

LG Superfan, 08 Jan 2020I was hoping if it could be used as ND filterWell technically, it can be.

You can argue whether it's useful or not, but you can't argue that it's innovative nonetheless.

I for one like it when companies try something new & different, even if it's a gimmick. They're better than those companies who keep rehashing their products with generic & predictable upgrades year after year.

Yuck, also I have always thought that these phones branded with sports car and designer logos make them look really cheap and tacky!

YUKI93, 08 Jan 2020That electrochromic glass may sound like a gimmick on smart... moreElectrochromic glass can be controlled by software just like the webcam. Only difference is that user would be able to tell if the camera is active.

T M, 08 Jan 2020The ND feature is clever. The only thing useless is your post. This is not a great innovation for the formfactor of nowadays mobile...

That electrochromic glass may sound like a gimmick on smartphones, but it is definitely useful for laptop webcams. Think about it, that electrochromic glass will close the webcam from getting hacked by hackers and yes, getting your information hacked just from the webcam is indeed possible. As for the camera's ND filter, welcome back Nokia 808 PureView. I really REALLY miss you.

So is this design remotely viable in a future phone, if not, then surely time and money over the last 18 months would have been better spent on improving the camera software etc?

uk7866, 08 Jan 2020Completely pointless and uselessYou probably posted the same about an under screen finger sensor in the past!

A concept design is all about showing what can be produced and testing customers response/demands.

I wonder how of a battery drain it would be to keep the glass opaque?

(This reminds me what Giacometti said: "Between a Rembrandt and a cat, I choose the cat.")
