13 January 2020
Kernel sources for the Mi A3 are also already out, so an OTA for it shouldn't be far behind.

Who will know for how long their phone software will be for with their devices - be it Pixel or 3rd party OEM. I will tell you none. Only nerds will go and find out about such things.

"It's Xiaomi's responsibility my friend, not Google's" - that's why it sucks. Be it 3rd-party manufacturer Android One or Google Pixel phones, all Android phones supports are just short. Ultimately, it all circle back to Android has much shorter lifespan support than what Apple is giving to their customers.

        1. "No one in the right mind will go and research about the software updates lifecycle and periods for their mobile phones". It's funny how what should be done was the ones to be considered negative in this time and age. Too much of a herd mentality would be there for this to prosper.
        2. "Problem is Google just lazy to support older phones.". It seems as though that you still can't differentiate a Google's mainline phones (Pixels) from the 3rd-party manufacturers.
        3. "And to make things clear, Xiaomi A1 was not even under Xiaomi explicit care." LOL, this is hilarious at best. You should know that it's the 3rd-party manufacturer were the ones that decides when to start and to deliver updates to end-users, not Google.
        4. "If Google is not going to care about old phones like A1 with their Android One program, who will?" It's Xiaomi's responsibility my friend, not Google's. And to tell you this, that Mi A1 started Nougat and will end-up with Pie, OFC, it depends on Xiaomi if they want to implement up to 10 but even if they didn't it's fine with Google. Quoting from Android One's web page: "Android One phones will receive at least two years of OS upgrades.".

Also kindly read the footnotes in Android One's website, specifically this:
"** Confirm exact duration of support for phones in your territory with smartphone manufacturer. Monthly security updates to be supported for at least 3 years after initial phone release."

It is as easy as going to Google's Android One page, everything is already on the front page.

        https://www.android.com/one/

Again I say this, in era of information where it is so much easier to access, there's no excuse in being ignorant unless of course it's the user's own decision to be like that then it's on theirs.

DroidBoye, 17 Jan 2020Just because "no one does what they SHOULD have done" justi... moreWhat I'm trying to point out is, why consumers will be disappointed in the end when they are comparing Android vs Apple. If Apple can support much older phones, why can't Google? I don't see why it is users responsibility for that. We have our phones covered with the typical 1 year warranty and that's as much as an average consumer will understand and know. No one in the right mind will go and research about the software updates lifecycle and periods for their mobile phones. Stop pushing the fault to the end consumers. Problem is Google just lazy to support older phones. And to make things clear, Xiaomi A1 was not even under Xiaomi explicit care. Xiaomi are more concerned about updating their MIUI than Android One. If Google is not going to care about old phones like A1 with their Android One program, who will?

AnonD-122899, 17 Jan 2020TBH, consumers will research the specs of the phone. No one... moreJust because "no one does what they SHOULD have done" justifies their action (herd mentality). User responsibilities should also be performed by the user themselves, and what they does when they don't read? They get disappointed in the end. What's the basis of their disappointment? False expectations. The cure is easy and very accessible, the problem is what makes them not do such simple task? Well ignorance could somehow be one's own choice.

The first Pixel was launched last 2016, you couldn't just go back further because there were no Pixels before that. That Pixel is still supported until now (Android 10). To reiterate again that's Google's Pixel line-up, not just a third-party Android from the likes of Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi, etc.

DroidBoye, 16 Jan 2020Seriously, if people actually does a research, these type o... moreTBH, consumers will research the specs of the phone. No one, I dare say, no one will research on for how long Google or the respective phone makers will support the phones. And by that I do not mean the warranty of the devices, but the OS and security updates. Just go and ask around if anyone know how long their phone makers will be supporting updates for their phones? None I can tell you.

Google Pixel is expensive yet, I don't see Google having such long support life cycles like Apple does. Be it Android One or Google Android, it is the same across for all Android devices. So, your point of support duration vs cost of the devices is not true at all.

AnonD-122899, 16 Jan 2020True.... I expected too much from Android. Meanwhile, I'm s... moreSeriously, if people actually does a research, these type of things would become "as expected" rather than being a "disappointment". Android One does show in their own webpage about their OS upgrade and security upgrade scope an limitations and it's not that hard to research about it. Yes, iPhone 6s is a great phone and is now rocking the latest iOS that it could get but let's re-evaluate the price-point and the proper comparison. Price-point-wise, iPhone 6s way too expensive if you bought it upon its release while these Android One phones were very cheap. Proper comparison would tell anyone that iOS phones should be compared to the Pixels based on the upgrades and updates, not Android One.

movipo, 14 Jan 2020According to google, quoting: "With an Android One phone... moreAm I blind or what? Because I didn't see any sauce. lol.

Even if that is from a reputable source, you'll already know how ambiguos the word "faster" is being used. Faster than what exactly? Manufacturers can just fill in the blanks later? Lol. With your mindset towards Android One, you already failed to acquire the right product based on your expectation.

You want fast updates and upgrades? Buy a pixel.

You want a little delay on OS upgrades? Buy Nokia flagships with the likes of Nokia 9.

You want to have monthly security updates but somehow willing to wait for the OS upgrade later? Then buy the cheapest Android One you can get.

How hard is it to understand that priority comes with a price. Even Nokia sells cheap Android One phones with weaker SoC at the price of the MiA3 that hasn't been upgraded to Android 10 yet. Would you tell me that those cheap Android One phones were a failure? lol. Buy cheap phones and expect top of the line priority? You're delusional.
