Sony to unveil several 5G phones at the MWC

22 January 2020
There will be a couple of flagships, of course, but Sony may have 5G-connected mid-rangers in the works as well.

Anonymous, 23 Jan 2020Do you know of anyone who has used it? If you can't use it,... moreThere are literally people on XDA who said they used it, but it wasn't easy to get into. My point still stands, the fact that it's been there the whole time is amazing. Obviously the battery is gonna be an issue if it was allowed to be activated.

How's the gcam, any improvements over stock?

They said they need to put some optimization for the phone. I got my xperia 1 in June 2019, and at first, there was still a couple problems like the mediocre image processing and the unresponsive fingerprint sensor. But as fter a couple updates, the phonenworks well and the camera also improved so much (tho the auto still not as good as Huawei, but much better than before). Also the noise reduction in manual mode also works better now

During low light situation, you can just turn on HDR feature and lower the ev to -0.3 or -0.7 (if you're to lazy to set other setting). Then using Photoshop express or lightroom, you can just crank up the shadow and exposure but also lower the highlights. And the end result will be far better than what you would expect

Anonymous, 23 Jan 2020Production starts only after MWC to prevent leaks. Ohh... thats why they always have released 3-4 months away after MWC.

Since they're pushing for 21:9, all we can hope for is they make a 5.5 to 5.8 21:9 phone as a compact or a foldable phone.

April-May is really a good timing in my opinion and the reason why Sony uses MWC to announce phones early is because media attention. Sony can't do an exclusive event just to lunch the phone cause they are too small

Pitchwisse, 23 Jan 2020Imagine if they could only put a good camera on their phones.Their cameras are good but they work in very different way than most of the phone cameras. They want you to use the phone camera as their Alpha cameras for some reason. Probably a bad decision on their part.

Other thing is feature marketing such as Night Mode, when everyone was raving about Night Mode debut on Pixel almost two years back very few people knew that Sony phones could already crank up the light in low lit scenes but only if you use manual settings with object tracking. It is stated right there in the phone's manual instructions. Use spot metering mode to suck up all the light in the background and light up the subject that you tap on the screen which is then tracked so there is no blur around the edges due to phone shake. The end result is a lit subject at night time and not a photo that looks like a night has been turned into a day or dawn the way Pixel does. Of course it doesn't come without compromise such as blown out highlights or noise if you use high ISO but still it was something Xperia XZ2 could do before Night Mode. Current Xperia 1 also does a good job in low light situations.

Xperias don't do HDR stacking that's why highlights will get blown out but with phones that do HDR stacking something quite opposite is happening, they kill the light source highlights and blend them in with the mids, Huawei and OnePlus are very aggressive at killing light sources btw. That's the major complaint about Xperias: no faux dynamic range like the others. And that's a legit complaint, people should have a choice.

On the other side Xperias offer you predictive capture with four full size images to choose from when Pixel and iPhone give you seven or eight half resolution size images. Xperia has serious object tracking for burst mode so fast moving subjects don't suffer from extreme motion blur. Xperias shoot real HDR(HLG) videos, real hardware 960fps, they come with advanced video app that you don't have to purchase separately and even better app can tap into all the hardware features of the camera unlike Filmic Pro and others.

Aslong as it has 3.5mm jack I'll be keeping an eye on it!!!

Imagine if they could only put a good camera on their phones.

Definitely will wait for the Xperia 5 Plus. The inclusion of 3.5mm audio jack makes me want to go back to Xperia.

If they show up the devices in february 24 you should be allowed to buy the phones around 2 weeks after the event. Not as late as may/June. One reason that Sony mobile have problems. That are just bad business and somehow Sony seems not been able to learn from mistakes from the past.
