For me, photos in good light were far better with the Xiaomi camera app, and lowlight photos were hit and miss. The Gcam lowlight photos were brighter with better contrast and hightlights, but they were also noisier most of the time. I found I preferred the stock cam in both scenarios.

r31ya, 27 Jan 2020k20 pro 8gb, 256 still comparatively expensive.
With a lit... moreAgreed. In my opinion the Redmi Note 8 Pro is the best smartphone on the market in terms of value. It's astounding what you get for $200... speedy performance, amazing battery life, a very good main camera (in sufficient light), and aesthetics to rival the best looking flagships on the market. Seriously, I got the Ocean Blue model a month ago and I still regularly take it out of the case to gawk at it. Photos don't do it justice.
There are compromises, sure. The macro and ultra-wide cameras are strictly utilitarian, meaning they're fine for accomplishing a task (like magnifying tiny print or showing the true scale of a room) but not much for memories and visual enjoyment. The main cam, while excellent in bright light, struggles a bit in lowlight (particularly indoor). The display glass scratches really, really easily, making a screen protector an instant must. Also, you must install a third-party Launcher like Nova to bring out the phone's true performance, and to avoid seeing the occasional, accidental ad (although I'm not sure that's a compromise, as Nova Launcher seems to make every phone better).
Other than that, everything about the phone is either good, very good or excellent. I went from the OnePlus 7 Pro to the Redmi Note 8 Pro, by choice, because the OP7P for me had one intolerable flaw; The mics are complete garbage, rendering speakerphone useless (I use speakerphone A LOT out of necessity). That's a known issue with the OP7P (see the OP forums). Not only was I pleasantly surprised that the Redmi Note 8 Pro mics worked flawlessly, I was pleasantly shocked that I really didn't miss the OP7P's speed, camera, or OLED display very much, nor was the drop from 30W charging to 18W the royal pain I thought it would be (18W is plenty fast enough when you only need to charge overnight). Not only that, but the RN8P's vibration motor is stronger, wireless signal strength is better, the fingerprint sensor is faster and far more accurate, battery life is much, much better (versus my OP7P in 1080P/60Hz mode), and there are no annoying screen curves causing warping and glare and making my screen more prone to damage. Wow.
Yeah. Save yourself $200 (or 4 or 5 or $600) and try a Redmi Note 8 Pro.

Was this price for quite a while (since a week or so before the K30 announcement). They even had the the 8GB + 256GB Pro Premium model for CNY2399, which was an absolute steal.

At AliExpress, it's been around $400 since the second week of January. An absolute bargain if you want fast and abundant storage + more memory.
