HMD is made of Nokias mobile division, that was bought back from Microsoft.
It's founded in Finland and has many people from Nokia.
Their phones are made in China, just the same as Apple phones are.
It's not "another Chinese company".
Still, that doesn't mean they always make good products. No one does.

I just hope they ditch the glass back for a nicer design. It's time someone comes up with something better. Glass is glitzy/ugly and unnecessarily fragile.

That's why GCam mods are so popular. They bring Pixel-like experience to lower tier phones, giving spectacular results. Well, spectacular compared to stock experience.

Adoron, 28 Jan 2020Agreed. It's not the hardware, it's the software. I install... moreI use GCam too. The only thing I miss from the stock app is Ozo audio in video recording, it sounded really nice, but the stock app can't even keep focus on target, so I'm filming with Gcam too.

Anonymous, 28 Jan 2020All of these comments about the phone software for the came... moreYep of cpurse, but their is still no such hardware being released, so they cpuld have not use something better, what they could do and they did in symbian era (the one and only 808), would be to install another cpu or gpu reserved just for image proccessing (that could still take some time to proccess tough, so i don't know if the costs for something like that would have been worthy).

All of these comments about the phone software for the camera being the problem shows a lot of ignorance with the masses on the Pureview 9's issues.
It was the hardware that wasn't up-to-par. HMD attempted to pair a multi-camera setup with hardware that wasn't sufficient. No amount of software magic will do what the hardware can't.

Nick Tagataka, 28 Jan 2020That's good to hear, that penta RGB + Monochrome camera set... moreI can't call it a mistake as i love the quality my nokia 9 produces, as i come from nokia N8 nokia 1020 nokia 950 xl line, i see no downgrade in quality, as i also see no device managing to "destroy" them (well ignoring the wannabes from dxzero and of course using my own brain) the only complain i would have is the sharpness that needs to be tackled down in the next updates to come, in rest, the pictures come aut quite extraordinary and the camera setup has quite some interesting stuff up it's sleeve.

Or better said, why do you think HMD wants to abandon the Light setup? Because they probably already test it and came up with no such great speed results, and minding the society (cheap and specs) this days, they have to be crazy to release another niche device. Not that i would not like it, their pockets won't tough.

That's good to hear, that penta RGB + Monochrome camera setup was a complete disaster in terms of practicality and destined to fail by the way it works. It was unfortunate that Nokia 9 flopped hard since the rest of its hardware was actually pretty decent for the price, but this time around they might have a chance to make it work by going for Google/Apple's computational photography approach, or using one large RGB sensor and one equally sized B&W sensor for the ultimate image quality. Hopefully HMD learnt from their mistakes in the past.

Besides a very synthetic output nothing natural about it, that might please your eye, not mine, i see nothing special, hack, pics coming from 8 years old lumia 1020 and nokia 808 put huaway's quality to shame.

Maybe they should have made the Red phone, and got Red to design a custom IC for their phones using Red's competing technology to light? There is a complementary partnership that has strengths on each side.

A disaster. The boss delays entry until after Christmas sales rush where it could have sold in much higher numbers. It also was enough of a delay that the phone spec looks weak, when it could have used the latest processor.
It did too much in software and the processor chipset without custom hardware to accelerate the light processing technology to complement the feature.
The sensor technology was not advanced enough to complement the light feature debute.
It did not have the light technology applied to video, even at HD, where 12 bit 4:2:2 HLG HDR rec2020.
It was rather overpriced for what it was.
Light has spent tens of millions developing the technology with custom chips, and now Sony phone camera modules, which a new version needs.
A 10x advantage was lost.
Yet, they refuse to make a super compact phone with best normal camera and video feature smaller than the Nokia 1. Even all the phones could include 4k now to get market presence on camera features. Excitement about old Nokia camera features, is not justified. Nokia does not score in the top of DXO Mark charts, when every phone should score highly.

Nokia had to ditch the revolutionary Light camera technology because let's face it, it is too advanced for the current chipset to cope.. Even the upcoming SD865 is not capable to handle such amount of data at once.. Nokia 9 was a proof of concept.. They will revisit the technology once the chipset is able to handle the required amount of data.. Maybe in 3 to 5 years time.. Remember the 41MP sensor in the Nokia 1020 made the Dual Core Krait(one of the fastest cpu at the time) crawl with heavy information load.. After about 5 years only now mobile chipsets has become fast enough to handle 48, 64, 108MP.. We will be seeing this multi camera Light technology used widely in 5 years time.. Nokia is always ahead of the curve, the pioneer of technology

The problem with the Nokia 9 was that they didn't put a strong ISP to go along with the cameras and instead used whatever the SD845 had which wasn't designed for 5 cameras at all. The result was a slow and sluggish camera system which hindered users from fully exploiting the potential of such a set up. Only the very patient who can wait 20 seconds or more for the phone to process were able to appreciate what this phone had to offer.
