Apple fined €25 million in France for throttling iPhones via OTA updates

08 February 2020
Apple wasn’t fined because they slowed down phones, it was fined because it didn’t tell its customers it was slowing down their phones.

Just under two tears. Freezes became longer and longer to the point where it was making the phone almost unusable. Appalling for what is supposed to be a premium product. Even my previous phone - my old Oneplus 3 - still runs better.

if you touch the adapter when the handset is still charging the plug adapter is warm.
This is the same for iphone and android handsets.

That's BS that just doesn't happen. The fact battery sits at 100% for 8+ hours every day is what's killing it. Why do you think all new devices come with battery at 50% ? Coz that's the best charge for storage without use...

It their mistake to replace the mobile even for a smaller repair.. and please don't compare a brand new android mobile's performance after 2 years as it may show the same speed and performance.. also the hardware of apple is too old that it cannot beat the latest android mobile (though its a copy of apple)..

My partner's iPhone became almost unusable with little to no effect on log term battery life.
Yet somehow my current Android phone has a few years on it now and still performs as well as it did from new. Battery life is a little less than it was but still easily lasts over a day between charges (I'm a fairly heavy user as well).
Either Apple are making poor quality handsets and batteries with a rubbish shelf life or they are simply abusing their position. I'll let you decide which it is.

abigfanoftechs, 08 Feb 2020Forced upgraded devices - 25m euros => massive profit. :-) It's not "forced" upgrade. If they didn't slow phones down they'd be dying left and right because of worn out batteries. With slowdown they actually worked, but slower. The problem was communication about this or lack of it to be more specific. I have my iPhone XR for 1 year and my battery is still 100%. I only charge the phone to 80%. There is battery alarm that simply warns you about the charge and you unplug it sooner. Most people slam it on charger in evening and then phone sits at 100% entire night till morning, every day. That's what kills batteries, not Apple's need for people to "upgrade" their phones sooner.

My previous phone showed exact results over 2 years. It varied about 5% which is simply variatien between one to another.

Apple tried to cut warranty costs and force upgrades (many customers have an apple care and batteriea don't always last a year)

                    They were caught.
There is no defence for them.

But when a manufacturer deliberately pushes an update so that the phone slows down, that's not good practice for consumers. Hence the fine. Stop defending this greedy fruit company.

If 2 years ago I run Geekbench 4 and get score 4k/10k, I should get almost exact score if I run Geekbench 4 right now on my 2 years old smartphone, because CPU speed didnt degrade within just few years, and if it run the exact same test, the result will be similar..
The only thing than make smartphone "feels" slow, is because newer apps is just more demanding with extra features they add each update, BUT that's not the case if you run the old benchmark..
And Apple already admit that they DID throttle older device, and lost this case, you can't defend them..
