Samsung Galaxy S20 and S20+ come with 120Hz screens, 8K-capable 64MP camera

Interestingly, it's the telephoto camera that is tasked with recording 8K video. It can also deliver 3x hybrid optical zoom.

Anonymous, 13 Feb 2020So you're saying going to f1.8 from f1.5 is not a noticeabl... moreThe new sensor is 75% bigger, the loss of light via aperture is around half a stop. So s20 still gathers more light than previous s series phones.

Normally when the size of the sensor increases, adding wider aperture will soften the image. That is why super fast primes for real cameras are bulky because they have to add extra elements for sharper images.

Now you could say that they could have used the same dual aperture lens from previous phones, but since mobile cameras are made to be as compact as possible they would have had a smaller image plane and using it would cause vignetting. Maybe they will use a newer lens in the future.

The wide angle sensor is bigger, even though I would have preferred higher megapixel sensor of the same size.

So I'm pretty sure I have comprehended right.

My math is not wrong. Your comprehension of the situation and what I said is.
There was no good reason for taking away the dual aperture and hindering some of the added pile intake.
Just like there was no good reason for again using a 12mp, limiting other camera apertures, or downgrading the ultra wide.

The only "good" reason is their profits.

So it's only 12mp again...when it was hardly acceptable when it came to the S7. Let alone the s20. But oh at least now years and years later....they finally made larger pixels...woo. but then take away some of the benefit that would have otherwise even came with that. That's really short shafting.

Then they downgrade the ultra wide. We were licking to even get an f2.0 on the tele one. Or ois on the others. Cause 1k and up phones don't make enough profits for them to properly support other cameras even though they cut corners in the main one already.

Samsung calls it a 64 megapixel tele camera although it is a 64 megapixel wide angle camera. They call it a tele camera due to marketing reasons because it allows for good digital zoom, which could outperform the S10 tele camera.
Though it's possible that they need to crop the sensor much for 8k, then it won't be very wide.

It's a shame that Samsung calls a 28mm equivalent camera a tele camera. I am not saying that the digital zoom won't achieve good results, but it's totally wrong to call this a 64 megapixel tele camera. It's a 64 megapixel wide angle camera. That's one of the worst smartphone camera marketing deceptions I have ever seen. At 2x zoom you will get approximately 18 or 19 effective megapixels, not 64.
At least they state the diagonal angular field of view, then you can calculate that it's equivalent to approximately 28mm on a full frame camera, but not everyone understands that.

So they up the pixel size but then drop the dual aperture and go from 1.5 to f1.8.
So on top of using yet again another 12mp camera they even hindered half of the added light intake by reducing the aperture. And f1.5 to f1.8 is noticeable.

And to make it worse they reduce the ultra wide from 16mp to 12mp.
Phones are no longer exciting. They are disappointing objects of corporate greed now.
