Apple started the pattern wars.
Its malefic and they did not want to defend them selves over the appearance of copies or pattern infrigment.
They just want to make more money out of nowhere, by abusing their great influence in the goverment body and one of the greatest law teams there are.
Its a sad story, but they have invested far too much, to let it go. They need to make money out of it and thatswhy sometimes, they care less for the number of sales and can afford to keep their prices sky high, in order to build that hype.
It is also a core part of their maerketting, which has always been the firms priority over everything else.
It is very counter prodective for the market though, the companies spend too much attention and money on this, rather that making better phones instead.
Hopefully, they will figure this out, join forces and take out Apple. Apple really needs to lose many consecutive times, start losing more money from these battles and hopefully then, everybody will turn their focus on the client end product and will start making money from the profits, rather than the patterns...

Simple Explanation.
Hardware Has STANDARDS , u cant use whatever designs u like , just like Antenna of phone , What happend when iPhone 4 had different style of Antenna ? Failed epic.(I mean iPhone 4 was hit but reception and signals failed , appstore really saved iPhone 4 to be honest)
Same with charging ports or slots , Every company has to make same SD-slots , same size sim card-slots and same Li ion batteries (i mean li-ion is same technology for all), u cant change any of them.
Only thing which is really customisable is design , Display.
If u look at displays , they are lot of them coming , each one of them has pros and cons , LCD handles battery life pretty well for Internet browsing while LED shows poor performance in that area but produces nicer colors compared to LCD but again pixel density LCDs are really very good with IPS , Decent resolution and Battery life.They may not be best.
What about software ? Complete freedom comes here but unfortunately apps have restrictions , even android apps , they have to follow guidelines regarding interface etc.
But OS has no limits , u can use any Kind of UI u want and also U can integrate it with other OS as well , nobody stops u here .
In that respect Apple is doing great from first by maintaining independent eco-system with all great stuff , sure some prefer windows other prefer Mac/Linux really depends on user's choice.
Software R&D is very hard because , u see no manufacturer has guts to make their own OS , Look at Nokia,Apple and Samsung only 3 companies who make their own OS , Bada , Symbian and iOS.
Samsung already makes flagship with android only , most companies also same like HTC or Motorola or Sony because making good OS is not easy task , it requires lot of expenditure and also lot of work to be done to make all stuff work right out of box because software must be coded and supported after release , u have to constantly update and identify specific issues and bugs and improve existing features to improve usability.
Who is using technology on their own really ?
Samsung ? They depend on google for software for their flagship device and then mix their Touchwiz UI , same with HTC , Motorola and Even Nokia (Windows 7).
In that respect , Apple's case is reverse , they make software but take help for manufacturing hardware ,
they design hardware but samsung manufactures the designed hardware like A5 chips which is slightly modified for iPad,iPhone.
If thats what u are talking about , "Only manufacturing takes place by samsung and that too components , but not phone itself" , primary design of phones, hardware chip design(architecture to be right) and software entirely done by Apple.
Its like ATI and Nvidia , both make components using same materials but each of them have different architecture and drivers to support them.

A generation of VCRs flashing 12:00 beautifully illustrates "technical details" vs. design. Primary functions (ex. pre-programmed recording) were widely ignored because of poor design.

i go crazy when i get this thought that apple is being sued by the company which was first going to be sold to apple. i.e. google wanted to sell itself to apple before. and Moto now is owned by Google Inc.

Grow up. Any business is out there to make money & they're all suing each other.
The only losers here are we the consumer.
I do find it laughable though that any time Apple sues a company over an infringement of their patents then the rabid anti apple brigade are up in arms about how bad it is to sue. But when the situation is reversed then all of a sudden it's ok... hypocrites.
