Samsung Galaxy Z Flip's durability tested, display scratches like plastic

17 February 2020
The UTG display has a plastic protective layer on top just like the Galaxy Fold.

Weird putting glass behind a plastic.

So what's the actual point in using UTG? If the top layer is still plastic it won't help at all with scratch resistance and it's not improving screen durability better than plastic.

And your response to me setting the record straight is to veer off a tangent.

Samsung said they used a UTG. Evidence prove they used an UTG.

You have your panties in a bunch because the ultra thin glass is ULTRA THIN. And as such one layer less thick than a hair strand is insufficient. Cue the use of plastic on top.

You don't need an engineering degree to have common sense.

They could have used plastic on the OLED panel itself, if they had the SoC and RAM designed to dissipate heat through the back glass. Then they could have boasted about the "Ultra thin glass". This thing won't last half a year in the real world, and if you somehow manage to maintain it for a year or two, they will cut the software support...

This is only a good show phone , nothing much for 2020 : no 5G support ,no wireless buds in the package,no gold color for all markets .
I'm sure people that will buy this will use it for Facebook and posting cats on Instagram 🤣

Imagine buying this and theres a tons of fingernails scratches after few months. I dont think the 'ultra-thin-guy' scream would help for screen replacement cost.

Maybe there's a glass, maybe no. regardless of w/e video links , IDC. as far as im concerned, based on their glass marketing, they are putting a perspective on consumer that 'it has glass, thus it wont scratch'.

I geddit its one of the earlier foldable screen production , but me as both consumer and promoter, i could not tell my customer how easily scratch. i have to mention it has utg, i have to convince,i couldnt tell any cons bout it. but at the same time i feel bad about it.

idk man it doesnt feel right, they should'hv mention more on the utg materials because not everybody watch JRE. we have walk in customer here.

Samsung did not surround the glass with plastic to make it flexible. The glass is itself flexible. The plastic overlay is a practical choice at the moment because the glass is ULTRA THIN.

Seriously, what part of ULTRA THIN is difficult to understand.

This is a youtube video clearly detailing how UTG is made -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gdugM7NTRoQ.

                    It was uploaded in 2017.

You can clearly see the glass being rolled into a drum like polythene.

With thickness of less than a hair, Samsung couldn't have realistically used just one sheet to protect the display. Not at this early stage. That's why the plastic film overlaying the UTG is PART of the display architecture.

Samsung marketing is as accurate as it can be. It uses UTG.

And if you've ever used the Fold, you'd appreciate why this is a big deal. I have and am just as excited as Samsung (and tech reviewers) about the implications of UTG usage--from a reliability, durability, and user experience standpoint.

Anyone saying the Flip's display is the same as the Fold's and Razr's is spouting FUD. They're not even close. And if you could afford folding phones, you'd know.

They just found a middle ground instead. I mean I get it. If I tell you I made a phone with a supercomputer processing power, you'd be expecting it to have a 16 core Intel processor at least. But it would be impossible due to energy consumption and TDP. So I'd give the phone access to many supercomputers over the Internet. Technically it's true. I have found a middle ground, but not the one you expected. You'd be right to think I lied. But I did not. Or like you could play a certain Assassins Creeds title on Switch in Japan. but in fact it was streamed from a server. You're still playing on the Switch.

Surrounding glass with plastic t... moreI understand your point, but at the same time your point doesn't make sense. What's deceptive about adding a protective layer? AFAIK, S10 units came with something similar out of the box (at least in some markets like mine) despite claiming GG6. And there was GG6 under the protective layer. Here, the UTG exists and is fully there. They're not lying when they say the display employs UTG. It feels to me like you're mad because the glass bottle of water you bought was in a plastic bag. It's still a glass bottle of water inside. But still let me assure you that I understand your, shall I say, "underlying" point haha.

It's obvious that UTG would be incredibly fragile still, even more due to being ultra thin.

people are not smart enough to understand properly the benefits of ultra thin glass invention.
People were trained to think that the only important property of glass is when it does not scratch easily, that is all they know.
Well, of course, scratches are not pleasent but with care can be avoided. But glass has other properties, which seem not to count for some, but are important. Perfect planar surface for one, even after long time use and stress. Mere fact that this is glass and not plastic implies it will not deform easily over time. Even after prolonged use you will see a perfect planar surface of the screen. When light will reflect from this surface you will instantly see a perfect mirror reflection instead of a diformed one which will make you feel you own a cheap toy product in your hands. That is one big difference between plastic and glass. Starting from here I am sure the technology will improve in years to come and probably will become scratch resistant also, but for now please dont just say it is crap because it scratches, because the truth about it is it is genial because it is glass.

but we are not there yet. More concerning when we discuss plastic displays is that they deform very easily.

This lie is not surprising coming from a company which lies about its so called QLED tvs which are actually LCDs. Lied about the zoom on the new S20s.
