Huawei and other telephoto lenses become useless in low light.
The 2x optical zoom brigade of phones simply give you a crop from the main sensor in low light.

The Quad Bayer imx 586 actually gives you good low light pics through telephoto lens.
Though resolution is reduced to 12mp, effective pixel size is increased to 1.6 micron.

    Camera isn't the only thing on the phone as far as HW is concerned.

      Even if there was a stable GCam port that has 100% compatibility with Mate 30 Pro, it would produce really crappy photos especially in lower lighting. Because let's face it, there's no way HDR+ could work well with RYYB sensor that has such strange colour characteristics.

      So with GCam the colour reproduction would be horrendous, the detail level would get worse and yet noise would be still more pronounced because of less advanced NR method. Hopefully they will perfect the night mode algorithms on P40 series, and if they manage to do that then I don't think I will have much complaints against their still image processing.

        S20 Ultra camera sucks. And that is your major selling point for S20 line.
        Either the sensors are not that capable or Samsung engineers have not enough knowledge to implement them in the right way. Look at all that processing artefacts. Samsung, I suggest you hire Nokia engineers that implemented Lumia 930/950 camera. Until then you are very far from having a good camera.

          Unfortunately the real potential of the HW cannot be extracted out of Huawei.
          The locked bootloader messes up a lot of the potential.

If you're an offline user then you'll going to tank huge pricing. Waiting after 6 months would be better instead of buying this phone while the hype is still there.

It is 1 to 9 binning ratio. Do the maths yourself, meaning it makes much better quality pictures in 12mp than M10 in 27MP

                    Terrible pricing, who cares what camera it has when it cost more than Proper DSLR

                            Low light performance is great and appears to be a substantial upgrade over Note 10, though the night mode results are.. mixed bag. It retains more details but everything looks oversharpened and it's clearly screwing up HDR tonemapping leading to unnatural photos with way too much highlight compression. It's interesting that some manufacturers (Samsung and Huawei) tend to do a lot better in auto than dedicated night mode unlike others (Apple and Google).

Users received it as one of many software updates, if the update description says "optimised camera performance" or something like that then most likely it's exactly that. Not to mention Mate 30 Pro 5G, that had the latest software version available when it was tested, got higher score than the original Mate 30 Pro.

                                  Can't wait for a nice trustable GSMArena, the past 2 years I've found it camera test logic system is more reliable than DxOMark.

                                  If all not forgotten, when DxOMark tested Huawei Mate30 Pro, they stated it was tested with a special camera software provided by Huawei, which not yet release to consumers, and help it got 121 chart topper rating, period. But until today 22/02/2020, that special camera software still not release to consumers, resulting many Mate30 Pro are still with inconsistent bad quality photos.

                                        Absolutely horrible photos. I knew it - nothing has changed since the S10-series on the camera front.. Useless 108 mp camera..

                                        Guess I'll take a pass and keep my Note 8 which takes equally good photos. Maybe S21 or S22 will be better.
