HMD will continue making Nokia phones with ZEISS optics, despite the new Sony partnership

24 February 2020
The Xperia 1 II is the first Sony phone to sport the ZEISS logo (but Sony has co-developed many lenses for mirrorless cameras with ZEISS).

Anonymous, 25 Feb 2020HMD barely do their own stuff. Many of their phones are ODM. Your comment barerly matters, you still talk tough...

Anonymous, 25 Feb 2020Let go , this is just sad.. You're pretty sad as well, you actually took the time to tell me that me wanting the old Nokia is sad. Yikes

When will (sorry for the misspelling) Schneider Kreuznach come back to make glass lenses for smartphones again?

Holy, 25 Feb 2020I think Nokia never use the Zeiss lens, it only use Zeiss name. Panasonic Lumix phone had a 1" sensor, does that make it the "only" phone to deserve the camera phone status that you're talking about?

Aquila, 25 Feb 2020In 2020 most flagships will have a 1/1.33 size sensor, Sony... moreSensor size is only one part of the story. Drivers and firmware inside the sensor is the second part of the story then there is glass, post processing etc. Neither of these things alone will make or break the image quality but all of them working together tells the whole story.

Each manufacturer tells the different story, Huawei really went for the low light imagery and they nailed it but on the other hand they really can't compete in burst shooting of moving objects. That's where Sony has always shined, bursting images with minimal ghosting of moving subject and no wonder they keep on improving in that area while they completely lack in spot metering as their images tend to get blown in highlights or underexposed in multimeter mode. They also lack HDR stacking. Samsung on the other hand caters to Instagram generation as their shots come out over-sharpened with over-saturated vivid color separation. Samsung does all of when it comes to photography and video it but neither of them is outstanding nor leading.

To get camera phone status it has to use 1/1.2 inches camera sensor like Nokia N8

I mean, seriously. Xperia 1 2 come on.... You guys can't even named your phone properly. I think Sony has the most worst naming scheme ever. To be able to brand you phone like a no phone. Call it A B C and then we go to A2 B2 C3 and then A21 B21 C21 ... like what the chicken is going on .... LOL

Anonymous, 25 Feb 2020Yawn , every time the same comments. Please stop mentioning... moreWell, it is sad that you don't enjoy history and learn from it. All these so called "innovations" that have been made recently on cellphone cameras are just copy-paste stuff from Lumia days. The only new thing on scene has been those Quad Bayer sensors with high mp count to compensate for the lack of huge pixels.

YUKI93, 25 Feb 2020I find it hard to believe that despite Zeiss tech on HMD No... morethe 808 actually had a severe fish-eye lens issue in full scale pics i.e. the corners of the photo had a rounding/curvature effect. for some reason, it was ignored by all reviewers cos of the large MP hype.

YUKI93, 25 Feb 2020I find it hard to believe that despite Zeiss tech on HMD No... moreany proof that old nokia pure view is better than 2019/20 phones? i am aware of 1inch sensor, but with multiple lens tech, surely flagship now is close to on par with nokia 808 quality

In 2020 most flagships will have a 1/1.33 size sensor, Sony will have 1/1.7? Even if the phone looks better than most, I"m not going for a 1/1.7 size as I already have one. Size matters and I often find that I can leave the bulk of my Sony A7 + lens and use my P30 Pro with very good results in good light or with flash. I'm looking forward to a good 1 inch sensor in a mobile phone, with stacking . Autofocus is good enough for now, so let's not be fooled by improvement in that direction. We need bigger sizes sensors.

AnonD-558092, 25 Feb 2020Zeiss optics just means that the glass is very good quality... moreProcessing plays a major role.. JPEG processing on Nokia phones are not at all impressive & nokia 9pv is an example. It has great camera hardware but processing had ruined it. I liked nokia 7+, 6.1 for its image quality at the price point. 8, 8 Sirocco, 8.1 miserably failed. And N9 has better RAW but it is not for all.

YUKI93, 25 Feb 2020I find it hard to believe that despite Zeiss tech on HMD No... moreZeiss optics just means that the glass is very good quality and coated with something that helps in very bright conditions. I have a ZEISS webcam at home and the quality is still garbage in all conditions. On cameras, optics are everything because everything else is already top notch. On phones, not at all.

I find it hard to believe that despite Zeiss tech on HMD Nokia's Android-running smartphone, they still cannot surpass the quality from Nokia/Microsoft Lumia PureView smartphones. Even in 2020, the 808 PureView and Lumia 1020 alongside the Lumia 950/950 XL can still produce far better photo quality than today's Android or iOS smartphones.

Sony definitely have a lot of work to do if they want to lure me away from my trusty Lumia 950 XL.
