        HM1 has a faster readout speed than HMX and is technically capable of 3D HDR output (I'm assuming this is something to do with one shot HDR), but also comes with substantially reduced effective resolution from 27MP to 12MP and this heavily affects the detail capturing ability in most lighting conditions. Now compared to S10/Note 10's sensor from last year, it is in fact downgrade in some areas, such as the autofocus system and the inclusion of DRAM. I don't deny that Samsung is using the top end sensor for S20U - but they didn't really set any new bar for the rest of the industry this year. As far as the main camera goes, it's on an equal footing with Mi Note 10 Pro or Mi 10 Pro.

        By S20 series I meant BOTH S20/+ and S20U. But IMO the former has a better zoom solution simply because the latter does not employ any image processing technique to make up to the lack of short-to-medium-range telephoto lens (2-3x). S20U has an issue somewhat similar to what P30 Pro had last year, where many people including me considered that the regular P30 had a more practical zoom camera setup than the pro variant.

            Although The GSM workaround solution is not a problem for me but the lack of bootloader unlocking is a deal breaker.

            I switched from p20 pro to s10 for the same reason. Didn't upgrade to a Huawei flagship ever since.

                  But if you test out in the real world, 10x hybrid zoom or even 30x zoom from Samsung, it's pretty usable while the p30 pro with 5x optical and 10x digital zoom, the pictures look much worse.

                    You can paint the turd pink anyway you want, but it won´t change the fact that Samsung is going to have a better camera this year. Huawei lost its advantage in this department and frankly, without GMS, there is no valid reason to buy Huawei over Samsung or Xiaomi. None. Unless you are die-hard Huawei fanboy like Shui or Tagataka.

We saw 1/1.33" sensor for the first time on Mi Note 10 last year, and Samsung's implementation of zoom lenses on S20 series is far from the best. I believe with proper gcam port Mi 10 Pro could be a better camera phone than any other phones on the market right now.

                        Scarface007, 24 Feb 2020Quality of 4x optical zoom from Samsung way better than 5x ... moreEven if Huawei used the same small 8MP 1/4" sensor for the 10x periscope camera, that would still produce better looking image than what S20 Ultra's periscope camera is capable of churning out at 10x digital zoom.

                        At 240mm equivalent FL, S20U would be using only centre 5.77mm2 portion of the sensor whereas full 8mm2 would be used on P40 Premium, which means the latter would still receive more light even after taking the F stop difference into account. And let's also not forget the fact that S20U's telephoto lens uses a quad Bayer sensor hence the effective resolution is quartered.

                        Combined with Huawei's better detail processing and super resolution stacking techniques kicking in under 3x zoom factor, I don't see how they could possibly lose to Samsung in regard to zoom quality unless they really, really mess up something; like getting rid of super res zoom for no reason, not having an intermediate telephoto lens etc.

Definitely quite competent already.

                            Facebook & Instagram and some other apps can be downloaded from the Amazon AppStore.
                            As for YouTube, there is NewPipe, SkyTube, YouTube Vanced or the website.

                              So how to get GMS on this phone? because without gmail, youtube, facebook, insta, etc. for me this phone is just paperweight (owning a P20 since the first day of availability and loving it…)

Samsung just introduce 4x optical this year, whereas Huawei already at 5x optical last year. P40? 10x optical. Dont care about those small pixel size used at 108mp (even actual camera full frame dont exceeds 64mp, 48mp are norm) or either those bad quality 100x 'space' zoom.

                                    So no, the bar just set very little, until P40 comes out. Samsung took 1 year, Huawei just need a month to answer.

So far i have seen usual noisy grainy night shots and the usual Samsung heavy handed processing. And no 100x digital zoom is gonna zoom into space. Nothing revolutionary about it
