Tax hikes in India happen in a similar way in my country. The goverment runs out of money and instead of cutting down expenses and fighting with wastage and corruption, it increases taxes especially on electronics. Instead, corruption gets more and more every day. Or, local brands can't sell their overpriced ODM trashes and ask the goverment to increase taxes on imported phones rather than requesting tax discounts on their products. In the end, this situation affects the customers.

India starts taxation from 5 lakh INR per year income, which is roughly equal to $7000 per year. Only 1% of the population earns more to pay that tax. That 1% is the source of every bit of revenue the government gets. They consume and pay luxury taxes on their cars and electronics as well as extremely high amount of cess. And in return we get absolutely nothing. The electricity is erratic, the water supply and quality is suspect and the public transport is garbage. On top of it, every government provided service is substandard since it's made for the poor and you know, anything goes there.

This creates a good gap between the 99% of the population that's mostly illiterate and naive and the 1% who actually know what's happening. The government just ignores the 1% and use their money to give freebies to the rest of the population, like waiving their loans or giving them free electricity. This makes it easy to garner votes, because it makes sense in a democracy to ignore the minority.

This country has no future. Almost everyone you see who can write in decent English is actually part of the top 1% in India. That doesn't mean he's rich by any stretch of the imagination by global standards, but he likely already knows what's happening and can't do shit about it since the government simply doesn't care.

There is no middle-class in India which can demand things. It's just dirt-poor people which comprise like 95% of the population, 4% or so lower middle class, 0.9% middle class which is screwed royally by taxes and the top 0.1% of politicians, corrupt government workers and businessmen which control the country and wealth.

I am not from India nor do I live there, but I know for a fact that currently they have a strong populist agenda and they are hard at work on tackling issues that would not benefit India as an emerging super economy. And believe me, a populist government does a lot to bring you immediate satisfaction but will only deteriorate your country in the long term. You guys need a government that would invest massively in public transportation (because of the smog episodes), education (an educated nation is a wealthy nation) and implement both stronger wealth redistribution mechanisms and stronger labor rights. And don't allow anyone thinking that "trickle down economy" actually works to make any decisions. In the US, they live by that theory, and yet the gap between the rich and the poor only widened in the last few years. Canada's much better in comparison on that matter due to multiple such mechanisms.
