AnonD-909757, 06 Mar 2020Exactly, Thanks you. This is a matter of preference, and I... moreYes, the hypocrisy of these companies is so obvious it's hilarious.

Is this the only phone in history that's used curved glass? The number of people buying these phones doesn't correlate with your personal fantasy of what the rest of the world thinks.

s-pen pusher, 06 Mar 2020actually, you both are correct- this is a matter of prefere... moreExactly, Thanks you.
This is a matter of preference, and I never said that no one should be able to have what he desire, that's the opposite I fight for, to stop excessive trend and allow diversity.
I personally prefer the look of a phone like, say, the Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro or the incoming Redmi K30 Pro who have flat display with thin borders over any other curved edge device, like a OnePlus 7 Pro or a Samsung S10 for example.

          Redmi K30 Pro :

          Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro :

          OnePlus 7 Pro :

          Samsung Galaxy S10 :
          https://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s10-pictures-9536.php

I recon that some peoples find appealing the curved edge, I, personally, don't find anything attractive about it.
Actually, funnily enough, the K30 Pro can help me prove my point with this render (that is clearly incorrect) :
          https://i.ytimg.com/vi/BRN7TOTu2UA/maxresdefault.jpg
The phone have curved edge on all 4 sides, and to be honest I found it awful, it look like a grandma purse...
          https://i.etsystatic.com/6193324/r/il/76fbe7/1780195692/il_570xN.1780195692_8w7c.jpg

And its not this particular render, this one too :
          https://cdn0.tnwcdn.com/wp-content/blogs.dir/1/files/2016/10/Screen-Shot-2016-10-27-at-11.57.00.png

Now if we talk about the Mi Mix Alpha, then THAT is a great use of curved edge display :
          https://3dnews.ru/assets/external/illustrations/2020/03/05/1005220/mix1.jpg

          Same with this :
          https://s1.ibtimes.com/sites/www.ibtimes.com/files/styles/lg/public/2015/03/10/iphone-7-6s-curved-edge-display.jpg
As the curved part actually is another display and therefor don't (shouldn't) interfere with regular use.

But when we see how much glare there is :
          https://cdn.gsmarena.com/vv/newsimg/15/01/s6-dual-edge/gsmarena_001.jpg
No wonder why they now tend to either push it to 90° to make a side display or simply flatten it to make it almost flat like the Oppo Find X2.

That remind me of the notch, while on iPhone it is actually well designed and is functional, on Android phone it was useless and it quickly disappeared in favor of the waterdrop notch, meaning they actually try to make it so small as if there tried to understand that it is actually unwanted.
The hilarious part is that, if you look at basically all official render or pictures, you'll see that it is quite hard to see the notch or punch hole, either because of the wallpaper they use or the shadows/angle/off frame hiding it, they know so well it is a hated feature they are ashamed and hide it but yet keep doing it.

And the same way at first notch and punch hole were put forward by the brands as a "great feature", hopefully the waterfall trend will also wear out and we will be back to have more choices !

again, that's just some of us; these devices do cost alot, so some people may really prefer appearance over function.

i am an artist and used to do sketches on the go with the galaxy notes. as an artist, i first thought that the curved edges of my note 8 then looks really beautiful; then i ran into problems because i am not able to run my s-pen up to the edges because my sketches looked deformed when printed out. as time went by i also am realizing that the videos i view full screen in landscape distorts at the top and bottom, and then other bad things came successively that i finally decided that the pretty looks is not worth the tradeoffs.

i guess samsung is realizing this itself that's why its s20s are not that much curved anymore.

AnonD-762416, 05 Mar 2020How a personal device looks is a very important detail for ... moreYes it does, and clearly not everyone think the curved edge look better, actually a monolithic look can sometime be way better, which is exactly what Sony does, and a lot of peoples actually find their phones beautiful the way they are !
Also, are you really telling me that peoples would choose a TV which look beautiful but have a shit image quality, tons of negative points and cost more over a TV which look normal but have a great image quality, no particular issues and cost less ?
You can take your sentence to yourself too, who are you to think that MY opinion is just MY opinion, but your, because you happen to love a particular feature that spam the market, is actually the golden truth ?
And as I said, it isn't only my opinion, which is the whole point of the 3 links containing poll clearly showing that the MAJORITY actually don't like the curved edges.
So yeah, MY opinion is actually the same as the majority.
So between you and me, the one whose opinion only represent self preference, is actually statistically and realistically more you than me !
A LOT of users would prefer function over appearance, there is tons of things where the function is important that actually show that, if you choose your phone based on its appearance rather than its features, I am sorry but you have a really poor set of criteria for a device made to do so much important tasks in modern society.

Also the harsh truth in this world of capitalism, is that most peoples actually buy things they can afford first and consider appearance last.
If you have the choice between a fork that is beautiful but cost a lot and is unpractical to use and one which is normal in both appearance and function but cost little, will you REALLY choose the nice looking one ?
Even in love that's a stupid mistake to make, you choose someone because you fit with the person, not because the person is cute to you.
That's literally the ricer vs tuner thing, feel free to think riced car are beautiful, but don't say that they are a norm or even actually useful or even good, you shouldn't for a simple reason : because they aren't.
Funnily enough this exemple is actually even more relevant than I initially though because in car modification world there is one special category : Sleepers, cars 100% made for function while actually trying to actually hide any visual improvements.

AnonD-762416, 05 Mar 2020Nice job at projecting your personal opinion as something g... moreLets be clear about it, I have rules, I don't have any issues criticizing things which are trending and which cause problems, but I'll NOT do the same for rare features, even if I don't like or hate them, and I'm proud of that rule.
And the waterfall display clearly fit in that category as, regardless how it is defended, it have clear negative effects, a lot of peoples don't want it for reasons they even have justifications for, and it is present on way too many smartphones, the same is true for the punch hole or the notch.
For example, something like NFC or Wireless charging, well since it don't do anything negative to the phone and users aren't forced to deal with it, that's perfectly acceptable, but any features that clearly affect negatively user experience, are too trending and come with more cons than pros, clearly I can't just stay here and not criticize it.
You consider it look better, but I actually don't see a real difference, a punch hole or a notch have way more negative impact for me than the waterfall have "positive" impact.
But considering that not only you need to actively waste processing power and battery for compensating this while it is, as you said, hard to implement, meaning it have cost AND it is hard to get right meaning a lot of errors and negative output are way more likely to come with it, all that for something that supposedly make the phone look better at the detriment of user comfort, is for me not even a feature but an annoyance or a design mistake at best.
Now if you take into consideration that you quickly adjust yourself to find things you once thought were pretty quickly banal, blank (that a stupid brain thing), but user experience on the opposite the more the deal with annoying features, the more you want to get away from it, it all mean that once you experience something with such characteristics, you are happy at first then quickly, except if you REALLY like it, you'll want it gone...
And you obtain the perfect cocktail of the a really negative feature, that should exist, I agree, but should certainly not dominate the market !

For example, I really love and want pop up camera, for many reasons, but the biggest is the privacy aspect, and as mush as I wish there was more phone with it as it cruelly lack variety, and considering that I actually wrote a wall of text explaining that all the supposedly negative aspects are actually totally false and that it is actually superior to both notch and punch hole, I'll still NOT want it to become a major trend, because I clearly understand that variety is important and users should have CHOICE, and for no other reasons than this one.
But how would peoples that don't like that feature react if I was saying that they shouldn't have the choice and should actually HAVE to own a phone with it, that they like it or not ?

                      Edit :
                      Also generally accepted ?
Look at the comments, not just here but for all the curved edge display phones, there is a LOT of peoples that are against it, way more than you'll find which actually like or want it, so that's NOT generally accepted, as many other trend that the phone industry actually force peoples into, this isn't in any ways a generally accepted things, at best it is something that slightly less than the majority don't have big complaints about.

The waterfall display is impractical, but it does look a lot better than the boring old bezeled candybar. As long as the manufacturer does the palm rejection and the user experience right. I'm guessing that Samsung avoids using these displays themselves as the complete UX is hard to get right. especially considering how broken Android is when it comes to updates.

And actually many peoples why buy a phone with curved edge display actually hate and regret it.
When this feature will finally become off trend and will be an occasional thing, it will be play, until then, this is literally pollution as it is already hard to find what we want because almost all phone are basically the same, that's not for having to deal with that thing which invaded more than half the recently released and planned devices.

Misfit2Fields, 05 Mar 2020I haven't had that issue, the phone prevents accidental tou... moreThere are still all the other inconvenient :
_Worse one : The display is extremely exposed, in case of fall there is a bigger chances to destroy it, mostly considering that the side is the part that, because of the distribution of the weight, deal the most damage to the phone, only the corners are worse, but also a curved surface like that is more fragile than a flat one.
_Dangerous and annoying one : It is subject to glare and other reflects, that really annoying when you need to constantly reorient your phone to just see the edges of the display, but the dangerous part is when you are in a car on the front passenger seat, there is a huge chance to actually make distracting glares at the driver.
_While the phone itself get a pleasant aesthetic because of the almost whole display effect, the things on the display itself are really unpleasant to look at, that's no coincidence that when a monitor or a TV have a curved display, it is on the other way, concave rather than convexe, that's no wonder why we make mirrors actually flat.
_Screen protectors and case are harder to make, more expensive and protect less the device, and thrust me they are useful, literally 2 days ago my screen protector saved my OnePlus 6t display because of an accidental fall (even considering I really rarely drop my phone).
_They are more expensive to make, for that useless thing that a lot of peoples don't way but which is yet polluting the pool of available devices, we need to pay an extra.
_Curved mean less internal space, it waste space that more battery or other components could use.
_It keep fullscreen underdisplay fingerprint reader to become a thing even through it would be one of the best feature to have on the screen itself.
_It prevent a way more useful feature which is side tactile displays that replace physicals buttons and have a lot of advantages over both butons and curved edge display without the cons.
_It is now so everywhere that it have become more of a disturbance than a trend and is now totally unoriginal, or anything else and contribute to the overall issue of the phone industrie which is the obvious lack of variety.

Hahaha releasing a promo video showcasing the worst feature of the phone.
