08 March 2020

Xperia 1 II costs ~400 EUR/year vs. 222 EUR/year for an iPhone 11 Pro. It's dead on arrival. Sony will get out of the smartphone market, as will HTC, as will practically anyone who isn't Google or extremely important to Google.

How come? If you care about security you can only consider a phone viable while it gets security updates. iPhones get ~5 years of support. Sony is a LOT worse. The oldest Sony phone currently supported https://www.xperiainfo.com/global-en/software-security.html is 2 years old and there is absolutely no reason to believe the support is of good quality as terms are very vague (i.e. you get patches "periodically" so not monthly, not reliably, you get them when and if a security problem becomes a PR problem).

Apple will continue to grow and take over the smartphone market simply because Google created an ecosystem that provides no healthy value to anyone except Google. Don't expect 2x years old amateur journalists to show you the gigantic red sign that this problem actually is. They are concerned with getting a steady stream of products for free in order to publish ultra strong opinions about shockingly unimportant features.

Oppaii, 08 Mar 2020Im not really getting this. Sony fans are everywhere yet I ... moreSony is not even selling their phones in many countries anymore. They now only focused in Japan, HK, Taiwan, and parts of Europe, they are already pulling out from other markets, and defocussing previous markets like US.

So yeah, the seemingly many Sony fans are probably just old fans who won’t even be able to get these phones.

I cant find nothing else better than some more battery juice, main cam and selfie cam mpx count, everything else is better on Xperia mark II.
Heck, Sony even put the infamous reality changer "night mode" on this one.
And yes, Id rather give 90 euro more and get a phone with some premium grade stuff, than go Xiaomi A3 for 280, and get a weakly built, 720p screen, weaker audio device, just hoping those main and selfie cam offer some better shots to make up for all things missing.

the issue i have with chraper phones is that they're always missing the little things.

plug your usbc to hdmi cable and.. oh nope cant out the movie on tv thats not supported.
np ill use dlna! nope not supported.
guess youll have to buy a Chromecast and cast a paid service then. better have good internet too.

heres another one: oh you can just use Google pay if you want just scan your card and boom! what, no nfc chip? oh well that doesnt work either.

here's another one: just select ldac for your bt headset the quality is far better! what, only sbc? well fuk.. do you have a headphone jack then maybe?

heres another one: oh face unlock is so convenient and safe enough! whay do you mean no ir, no radar, no rbg scan? why does this picture of me unlcoks the phone! my iphone/galaxy s doesnt do this!

should i talk about gps quality? battery degrading to shit within 6mo? display quality?

everything is skimped on and honestly i find it dishonest from gsma to always avoid talking about it.

are the cheap phones good enough for a bunch of stuff? yes. are they nearly as good as last year flagship? no, unless you only care for the cpu.

Price of phone is not based on CPU.

People in 2020 still think Sony, Samsung, Htc, Motorola, LG, BQ and Google can afford making midranges with 7xx, 8GB, 128GB , imx686 for $250.
                    LOL !!!!!!!

Not unless they cut lots of stuff like Xiaomi and Honor do.

Xperia 10 ii is in my estimation an overpriced lowrange (SD 6xx) phone, nothing to be excited about. For its price you can easily get a phone with better specs.

Xperia 1 ii is more interesting, and I would like to see a comprehensive camera comparison between it, S20 Ultra, Pixel 4 and iPhone 11 Pro Max. Let's see if that Alpha collaboration Sony mentioned paid off.

Anonymous, 08 Mar 2020Alpha is sold in China. Also expected to be sold in India ... moreMan almost everything nowdays is china made.
Porcelain bowl from Ming dynasty or Ching dynasty for example is sold for no less than 3-5000 euros depends on size of bowl.
But small one for salad cost around this. Not everything which comes from china is cheap and cheap made.
Some things can get super expensive.
But prices mostly depends on Vendors.
Apple made in china for 400 dollars around 350 euros is sold for 1600.
                            Same goes for S20 ultra.
But genuinely same phone made by Chinese companies such as Xiaomi, Meizu etc. will cost half the price.

AnonD-731363, 08 Mar 2020Man Mi mix Alpha is not even out yet and the phone you talk... moreAlpha is sold in China. Also expected to be sold in India soon for $2700.

According to Android Authority the prices of Mi10 series in China are:

                                - mi10 (8 +128) = 3999 yuans ($573)
                                - mi10 (8 + 256) = 4299 yuans ( $ 616)
                                - mi10 (12 + 256) = 4699 yuans ( $673)

                                - mi10 pro ( 8 + 256) = 4999 yuans ( $716)
                                - mi10 pro (12 + 256) = 5499 yuans ( $787)
                                - mi10 pro (12 + 512) = 5999 yuans ( $859)

Let's consider the fact no other market gets same prices of China. Do not expect the base version of Pro (8+256) to be less than $800 out of China.

Everybody knows their govn gives many benefits to local companies to help them beat competition by lower manufacturing price.
No wonder why you can find a chinese plastic bowl that costs $1 and still has high profit.

Anonymous, 08 Mar 2020Well that's so easy to debunk. Go ahead and buy a $500 Chin... moreExcept, that's perception through marketing to generate a wrong opinion. Sony doesn't have to manufacture them extra quality, I didn't say that. But let's say they do manufacture them extra quality, you will find for the same spec, those extra quality things, and many features, are in reality really cheap to implement. So, you charge an extra $50, there you go, and get most of it. The actual cost to the manufacture might be $1 to $10, depending on what it is.

The problem you get with certain manufacturers is a culture of skimping to save a little money. So, you manufacture day a shoe robust, but you can save one cent each show, by cutting back a bit on the material. After you manufacture a million shoes, you save $10,000. That's what they actually teach people. But say you go even further and make it non-robust, even though it looks fancy, and eliminate 10 cents of material robustness. Now it lasts 6 months, but at one million shoes you get $100,000. You do this over the hundreds or thousands products your businesses make. Now you have up to a 100 million dollar saving for the company owners to go buy mega yatchs, or whatever. Now, you manufacture 100 million phones, that $1 to $5 saving, that's $100 million to $500 million dollars saving, but phone quality suffers, but there are enough people to buy the lower quality phone, instead of spending 2-4 times on the higher quality phone.

How does the Mi10 (not note) flagship compare in quality, and screen to the Sony? The Mi10 has scored well in camera features. If you want to buy a camera phone, how much will you miss out? But let's be realistic. If you just want to make phone calls, a $20 phone will do. If you want to do it well with extra memory for texts etc, maybe it will be $21-$30. But let's say you want to receive email.and watch YouTube. $39? But let's say you want basic internet and apps well $50. Let's say you want to do more on apps and moderate internet, let's say $100. But let's say you want to do mid range and mid range games $150, do it well with nice camera $200. Most of the market could do with one of those phones. Let's say you have some high end NEED, or high end camera, $300+ should be fine. Figures like that. But very few people actually need that $1200 phone. That, and the price reducing demand, ironically, increases the cost of making it.

Let's face it, Sony hadn't done so well. They need to change their strategy, and release their camera prowess at a cheaper price, and bring out smaller low end to high end models all with high quality camera functionality. (less about screen size for internet, more about everything else). I hope you agree?
