Flashback: the headphone jack has been around for over 100 years, still has a place on phones

15 March 2020
The simple 3.5mm plug is a jack of all trades, if you'll pardon the pun. It handles music and call, acts as an FM antenna and even a TV out port.

This would force people into buying more expensive phones instead, if they want more features. And higher price would be somewhat justified, because that would imply more features.

PartTimePhoner, 15 Mar 2020You dont benefit from having it removed. But you do lose op... moreIt should've been a sarcasm for those who demand for the removal of 3.5mm jack because they want a newer tech.
But now that i've read my comment again, it can interpreted both as offending thos who defend the 3.5mm jack and for those who demand for the removal of 3.5mm jack :\.

I've been using my "modified" M40x switching from my laptop and my phones if there's a phone call. I myself never considering fully switching to wireless headphones, and even considering my equipment to a better gear.

I wouldn't be surprised if they made a "gaming" phone with a gpu dock. Probably without a headphone jack aswell, which would make competitive games really awkward with that bluetooth latency. I wish these useless trends would stop :/

AnonD-908380, 15 Mar 2020Don't give them ideas pls xD. Imagine you forgot your gpu m... moreHaha.

I guess Intel route of having a small, integrated one would save the day, for potential blunders like that.

I was just speculating for demanding, powerful games (by mobile standards) anyway.

        :D

Ain't no piece of crap TWS buds can stand in front of wired audio, when it comes to quality and latency.

But it's more of the same PR bulls**t those greedy corporate types pulled with removable batteries and 'compromised waterproofing' lies.

JerryRigEverything proved that there's always space inside for good ol' 3.5 mm jack.

TWS and everything else wireless is cool and all - I mean we're talking about phones here, the biggest win for wireless technology. But the trade-off for explicit Bluetooth Audio simply isn't there; quality, price, charging convenience, latency - you name it. Moreover, forcing that choice down consumer's throat is plain evil.

Love the Community, 15 Mar 2020Is there any bluetooth amplifiers that runs on Bluetooth 5.... moreHave you checked Fiio BTR 5?

it's best of both worlds. A 3.5 mm Bluetooth adapter that's rather small and contains dual DACs, of the type found in latest LG high-end phones. And yes,it supports all the Bluetooth codecs, even Sony's LDAC. Could even be used as USB dac with laptop/computer. even got a 2.5 mm balanced output, 'apart' from the 3.5 mm jack. A freaking FPGA also!

I missed my chance to buy one of these and now, in my country , they're out of stock for 2 months :(

WazzaG, 15 Mar 2020And you obviously don't have a good grasp of.... Oh forget ... moreLiving in the technological stone age would be insisting on old tech like using those sliding phones etc. But yea I get it, you want to be ripped off by those companies. You wont stand up against them even though they force you to buy their own wireless buds that cost 3x more but have worse sound quality.

Even if that wasnt the case, why even is taking it out good? I mean, just put it there. You can still use your wireless headphones even if there is an audio jack. They dont really use that extra soace either. You dont even benefit from it being removed.

There is no benefit for you, but there is a loss for others.
You might not get hurt from it. But it doesnt benefit you either

                        Keep the headphone jack on!

AnonD-558092, 15 Mar 2020Haha lol. Though in reality it would never work. Whoever pl... moreNot necessarily, I mean there are other, less powerful implementation of GPU architectures which require lesser TDP. Like in embedded chips or U parts of laptop socs from AMD and Intel. Because even the most demanding mobile games don't require the likes of graphics horsepower an RTX 2080 ti would provide to play Ray-tracing enabled, battlefield 1 or tomb raider or metro Exodus. Thus the external GPU would not need to be that big or powerful.

While we have fans on phones these days, efforts are also there to create fanless compute sticks. So fanless (or with fan), small GPU modules is certainly possible. The best part would be no need to get x86 architecture on these 'Thunderbolted' GPU modules - means more power-savings. (However little it is) as well as no need to pay intel for x86 license, compared to current crop of embedded SoC GPUs which come onboard with x86 processors.

An external GPU Moto mod type eco system would definitely catch lots of eyes.

But let's live in reality. Because even if all my wishful thinking does come true, mobile game devs would still devlop just pay-to-win crap and nothing serious.

Whoever plays games on a phone and not on a Switch likes the fact that their phones are lighter and smaller than proper hardware. A dGPU for phones would void this advantage.

Losing the headphone jack on phones is just the beginning. Rumors point to Apple ditching the lightning port on the 2021 iPhones... ugh.
