If you as a manufacturer you buy some components, and the component manufacturers only provides drivers for 3 years. That is that, there is nothing you can do without reverse engineering their software and violating copyright law.

Or regardless of dirvers / firmware, if you keep putting updating devices, but the devices feel more and more sluggish because people expect more out of their new devices and it is not cost effective to produce 15 different versions of software to target hardware.

The day the general public start willingly paying for software we may see extended lifecycles of devices. But at the prices that people already complain about it is unfeasible to provide more then 3.5 -4 years of software engineering for the bundled price of device and software.

The majority of people keep their phones for more than 3 years. And if they don't, there is the second hand market. They should provide updates for 5 years minimum. If a company can't do that, they should release a new model every two years instead of 3-6 months!

AnonD-908380, 14 Mar 2020It lowers the discouragement of repair. Can't you think abo... moreBut this isn't the case. The majority of consumers buy a phone because they either want a new device, or damaged theirs device and use it as an excuse to buy a new one. Very few people with a 2-3 year old device (average life span of well cared for battery) want to just replace the battery, they want a new device.

Then there is the security standpoint. Do you really want millions of users out there with devices not receiving updates connected to public networks and logging into the same banking and shopping services as you do? I sure as hell don't. We all ready have a problem of a massively under educated populace opening themselves up to risks on their very versatile digital tools. Allowing these people, the vast majority of users, to continue using devices well past their serviceable life will do far more harm then disposing of and recycling these devices.

Its like telling your grandmother who now needs to login for online billing that its completely ok to use the windows xp machine she plays solitaire on to access her financial information.

What would be truly desirable is if this service could in some way sanitise Android from all its data-siphoning snooping.

Hopefully Huawei, Xiaomi and Apple all follow and do the same. In these times its good to see a comapny doing this.

People can say what they want to put a bad spin on this

Using alcohol is way more easy, you can also apply to the phone owner. Good thing we got enough alcohol. Use liquid if gel is sold out, just make sure it got enough %.
