Capacitive and optical fingerprint readers are faster and more reliable. No one was expecting Samsung to stay with Qualcomm this generation but maybe they have some sort of deal with Qualcomm. Anyway, the ultrasonic fingerprint reader is definitely a weakness in the last two generations of Samsung flagships.

The wait is long but ips surge w... moreWell, the IR optical underdisplay fingerprint scanner are indeed now ready for IPS panel, but it still is a mistake as ultrasonic are far better, the 3D Sonic on the Galaxy S10, S20 and Note 10 gave a bad reputation to the ultrasonic fingerprint reader sadly, but the heavily upgraded 3D Sonic Max from Qualcomm is a game changer, it can easily work through IPS panels, 3D reading give way more secure result, its overall security is increased and the large area scanning plus the ability to scan 2 finger at once is clearly the future, it beat both optical (visible or IR) and capacitive readers.
I wish the K30 Pro had a sonic reader rather than the IR one.
But anyway, both the sonic one, starting with the amazing 3D Sonic Max and the IR optical scanner will allow for UFPS on LCDs.
The first TVs with Miniled are already here and Microled is already really close from being released, so even better we might actually skip Miniled (well quite few phones will still have them) and directly get for the majority of the new gen display with Microled smartphones :D
If we finally can get carbon nanotube and graphene mass produced reliable with precision though, LCD and Oled will both get washed out of the market, but until then, the really soon coming of Mini/Micro led LCD's will be nice to have !
The only thing I prefer with Oled are Always On Display and lower consumption, but mini/micro led will make LCD able to get that.
What I didn't understand though is, why LED backlighting never evolved since the decade it have been available, they could simply have put an addressable LED backlighting panel that simply modulate the white pixels luminosity according to their relative LCD's pixels brightness, it would have effectively fix all issues of curent LCD compared to Oled with Always On Display possible, lower consumption (as only the necessary pixels would've been lighten up), avoid the glowing black etc etc...
It would have been a logical step between LED LCD display and Miniled LCD display.
I mean, just strapping a white only Oled panel on the back of an LCD rather than its typical backlighting would already be an evolution...And we don't even need an expensive one as input lag and response time wouldn't have a huge impact compared to the IPS itself...
But anyway, I think we might see some hit the market by end of 2020/early 2021, though that what would have been logical without the COVID-19 anyway.

But after finding out, I bought Mi 9 with DC dimming and it helps a lot, a lot. Tried OLED Saver app, it has similar effect but you need to keep it at high brightness for in-display fingerprint to work.

The wait is long but ips surge will come because:
1)In display fingerprint scanners in LCD are ready for mass production
2) apple will open the door wide open for minileds in their iPads their influence and impact on the production chain will curb LCD perception somewhat

DroidBoye, 18 Mar 2020Yes, IPS would be best.It sure would. I will never buy another AMOLED device to have to endure constant headaches and eyestrain from PWM. And AMOLED sucks anyway with the subpixels that reduce sharpness in comparison to IPS, especially noticeable on 1080p panels.

Man, if this thing has IPS it will be perfect. Nice to see them improving their vibration motor. That's one area where a lot of Android phones fall short to Apple.
