I have an iphone 5s which has been updated to ios 12.4.6 and performance and battery is not bad as the battery is original. I left and forgot about the phone until a few monts ago and its still very nice to use

LEEDAQ, 25 Mar 2020it's already draining the battery, I wish I can go back to IOS 11Battery always drains more after an update, for a few days or so depending on how much stuff you are hoarding on your device. The OS is re-indexing all files after each update and that takes a toll on battery and CPU for a few days. There are no slow-downs.

Zero bugs, no slowdowns, no security issues either.
Most of these apple users with 5 years security updates can be hacked using a simple phising link.
Unless a group of hackers specifically target you using the security hole or vulnerability (if it exists) which is not fixed through a security patch, you have nothing to worry about. The likelihood of such a thing happening is 0.00001%.
So lack of security patches don't affect the end user in the real world.
Ppl and several businesses used Intel chipsets for years without issues despite the Spectre & Meltdown vulnerabilities. As I said, unless a team of hackers specifically target you exploiting that security loophole, you are safe.
Ppl continue to fall for marketing gimmicks where they feel if they don't have the latest security patch, they are vulnerable or worse the phone becomes unusable after 2 years. These are the same people that can be hacked using a simple phising link and they are worried about vulnerabilities in the system that are less likely a threat.

But in android case, it is vendor who can modify the OS as it is open source & vendor is responsible for his devices. It this case some vendor goes with google provided android one OS so they provide updates for many years but redmi or vivo realme kind-of companies morph the android and give you their own version of android and they fail to give updates for many of their devices. So U can't compare whole android with apple. In this case you can compare apple to Nokia/google pixel.

Current ios 12 devices are iPad Mini 2, Mini 3, iPad Air, iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus... These are the only ones getting ios 12.4.6

It's ahead of iOS by 5 years.
I have Android phones from 5 plus years back which don't run latest version of the OS but operate pretty good without any slowdowns or bugs.
While IOS slows down battery and cpu on purpose with every subsequent update on these older phones.

maybe apple just realize some people buy older iphone to jailbreak and they release security update to fix the exploits and now people a force to buy newer iphone that support ios 13.. a absolute win situation for apple.

Downloaded and installed this new security update on my iPhone6 with no problems at all. Runs just fine as it did before. Have no idea how much longer Apple will continue doing this for such old iPhones with iOS 12 but I'm thankful Apple still supports them. Thank you!

Impresive. Think Louis made apple sweat a little. Think this is how Apple is going to try and prove a point. Sad part is this isn't parts - it's software and as tesla recently showed us with 2nd hand teslas software may have a change of heart.
