I like OnePlus and using one personally but its gonna be a tough sell in this hyper competitive smartphone market if they simply updated the CPU and camera then call it a day.

Code016, 28 Mar 2020I know right. When we get near to the "peak" smartphone, de... moreExactly !
Well maybe he was referring to the camera setup configuration and placement and how the top and lower bezel have the same size and curve, etc, for me those are just details and I honestly wouldn't be able to tell phone appart through those only...
And well, if they don't change much nowaday, that mean we reached the local maximum, so until the next big breakthrough, this current design style is the ideal one in most aspects.
I personally hope (and can't imagine anything else anyway) foldable phone will become their own thing NEXT to the regular ones like feature phone and smartphone spitted and not replace them, I'll hate to have to unfold my phone everytime, I would just kept it unfolded and I would hate to pay for a feature I not only don't want, but also don't use and cost a lot.
I mean, in theory we should all have laptop over desktop computer as they are smaller, don't require to buy additional display, keyboard and mouse, portable, lighter etc, but in reality, this isn't at all the case and I'd hate to switch my gaming war station for a laptop, even for the most powerful gaming one and many peoples would agree.
The same way tablets didn't replaced laptops nor big smartphones didn't replaced tablets...
Believe it or not, but I think the real next step isn't about foldable, it is actually about displayless...
The future IMO is clearly about image projected into the eye directly (at longer range than glasses) :
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_retinal_display
Bionic contact lenses :
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bionic_contact_lens
And direct brain human machine interface.
Unless we successfully implement holographic projection in the air before that, this is for sure the next real big step and game changer, until then, Smartphone won't really evolve much in their design.

AnonD-909757, 27 Mar 2020I am not joking or mocking, but what do you mean by "design... moreI know right. When we get near to the "peak" smartphone, design is more or less will be dead and for now this is really the most they can do on it. Changing backplate material, color, texture, and camera setup is the only thing they can do. Unless foldables is going to be the next smartphone form factor, we'll be stuck with this slab candybar design.

Mystic21, 27 Mar 2020Can't they charge the design a little? It's the same stale ... moreI am not joking or mocking, but what do you mean by "design" ?
I mean, except really different appearance like, say, the Xiaomi Black Shark 3 Pro or the nubia Red Magic 5G (mostly the transparent one), I don't see how design is really a thing on smartphone, I mean, nowadays they are just a rectangle with a huge display and except for things (which are features than design element) such as curved edge vs flat display, bezel vs notch vs punch hole vs fullscreen solutions, and different arrangements of camera on the back, I don't see much things which can changes.
For me its more like SSD who may have different colors or extra features like RGB but at the end are still more or less all the same than real design chances like you'd find on mouse, keyboard or even printers.
Would you explain me what you consider as design elements, please ?

Anonymous, 27 Mar 2020Looks like it is imx586, not 689. Did you really mean 689 or you meant 686 ?
Because except the OPPO Find X2, I am not aware of any smartphone which is planned to have the IMX689 which is the bi directional autofocus new tech, though it would be awesome if more phones started to have this !

My understanding from this news piece is despite the OnePlus 8 not having been through the rigours of assessing its level of ingress protection, as has its bigger sibling (OnePlus 8 Pro), the 1+8 nonetheless has protection equivalent to that of the 1+8 Pro.
If so, there would have been cost saving implications for OnePlus in not pursuing with IP rating for the non-pro phone, which should suggest these cost savings ought to be reflected in the retail price of the 1+8.
I can only hope the 1+8 will be of comparable price to its predecessor, the 1+7T, rather than escalating the price to ridiculousness as Xiaomi have shown with the announcement earlier today (Friday 27th March) of the global launch and price of their Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro phones.

Have they sorted out the colour issues when sharing images? I like the idea of OnePlus devices, but Mr Mobile said there was a problem when sharing images. Look at his 7T review, afflicts a few devices, including LG.
