My point of view is to wait a lil bit to get a new phone as prices are going to drop eventually in the months to come. Per example I would consider buying a Note 10+ around mid summer.

ANDROID manufacturers will need to lower their prices to a point where they won’t make any money....as if any of them making money besides the scraps samsung make

T M, 05 Apr 2020It's not, that's why this push is extremely stupid. With 4G... moreMost of the time I am at my workplace or at home where I can use Wi-Fi which provides much higher speed than my 4G. And I am happy with the speed I get from 4G.
I use my phone for email, LinkedIn, whatsapp video calls, messenger etc. & all those function without any hiccup. I don't wanna pay more bucks for any faster package for now. I would rather wait for my operator to upgrade my package to 5G. I will only then buy a 5G phone.

I am a normal person and i guess most of the users are thinking like me.

5G is better 4G, 04 Apr 2020Most of 5G phones uses SoCs manufactured through a more adv... moreIts common knowledge that its a newer node process. But that doesnt mean newer is more efficient. From anandtech - "Samsung’s 7LPP node is quite behind TSMC’s N7/N7P/N7+ nodes when it comes to power efficiency – anywhere from 20 to 30%." 7lpp is used in sd765g. N7 is older one. Since its midrange it wont be that bad, but you can see it in exynos 990.

Kirin 985 doesnt exist. Was there a 6nm soc?

"The design of antenna system in a 5G phone is also more advanced. It can be powered down or up, into one of the many power-states, depending on the state of communication." - so does this mean if you only use 4g on a 5g phone with an external modem these new antenna features will save power such that it actually is more efficient than a 4g only phone with an integrated modem?

Price cutting, maybe...but not price cutting of flagship devices.
There is no SD865 devices without 5G, that will be cheaper than it is, at least not soon.

Anonymous, 05 Apr 2020Wrong. Although 5G has high speed, it only has limited rang... moreYou are completely, utterly, clueless about 5G.

Except for USA, the primary 5G solution adopted by the rest of the world is Sub6 which has no issues with range. 5G is not just about speed, but more about enabling certain technologies so that people can do things that are totally impossible with 4G. 5G represents an entirely new communication architecture, with a new protocol between the base-stations and terminals (smartphones and other devices) which allows for richer, more complex, more contextual, and more nuanced dialog to achieve things which are totally impossible within a 4G network.

A good 5G modem implementation requires a much more advanced antenna design which does help 4G communication, in terms of faster connect, the ability to maintain a connection, and allows for more nuanced power-up and power-down for better power efficiency.

Implementation of this technology is still a few years away and the premium price of 5G in smartphones will remain at least until end of 2021. 5G on a device does not improve 4G in any way at all. 4G uses a different chipset controller compared to 5G and they are on a different wavelength altogether.

Please do some research before spouting nonsense.

Anonymous, 05 Apr 2020Already wrong..the Note 9 pro models...BOTH of them have al... moreThe formal lineup for "Redmi Note 9 Series" will be announced by Xiaomi in China in April. The real star of that lineup will be a 5G phone (two 5G models are also possible), not the other models currently listed on this site. The models announced previously by Xiaomi (India) are for Indian market only, and are likely not in that formal lineup.

Although the 5G infrastructure build-up is still several years away for many countries, but the process of transition from 4G phones to 5G phones has already started with "No Return". The whole smartphone supply-chain has already pivoted towards 5G. If you take a look at all the SoCs released for 2020, SD720G is the only (really) new SoC intended for 4G phones. All other SoCs are for 5G only: SD865, SD765G, Dimensity 800, Dimensity 1000L, Dimensity 1000, Kirin820, Kirin985, Exynos 980, Unisoc T7520. All the forthcoming new SoCs are also for 5G only: SD765G+, SD6xxG, SD865+, Kirin720, etc. (All those MediaTek Helio P, G series are either leftovers or a rehash of old chips.) In other words, there are no chips left for phone-makers to make "pure" 4G phones. The 4G phone production will stay on for a short while, for low-end phones. But what's next? The "pure" 4G smartphone, as we know it, has no future.

For buyers still living in a 4G market, this transition to 5G smartphones should have no negative impact on their smartphone need.

All 5G phones are also 4G phones. In general, a typically well-made 5G phone can function as a better 4G phone, in terms of thermal efficiency and modem performance. If you still live in a place without 5G service, you should start treating 5G phones as "a kind of" 4G phones. You are not paying any "5G premium" which is rapidly approaching zero. Before the end of 2020, we should see 5G phones priced competitively against 4G phones in all price segments (from $150 and up). The debate is still on whether we will see $100 5G smartphones by the end of 2020.

Some are refusing 5G infrastructure to be installed. Now I cannot tell if 5G does cause serious radiation or data piracy, but considering other factors (COVID-19 pandemic, which leads to slow rollout, high handset price, mmWave limitations, etc.) makes 5G obsolette at this moment. Also not all countries are ready to implement 5G due to the lack of infrastructure.

So is 5G a thing now? No. Do you have to buy a 5G handset? No. Futureproofing is a pathetic excuse as in coming years your handset will fall behind the trend and you'll end up buying another one.

Even 3g speed are okay at its fullest, but it also has a downside of heating your phone as hell. I'm sure 5g has more improvements technical wise under the hood. And those improvements are something which everyone should get, hence slowly standardizing its way through.
