Big price cuts of 4G Android phones are expected in the following months

Industry analyst points at COVID-19 and 5G as the main culprits.

Oh it's fine. 5G would take a good 2-3 years before being well-implemented in my country, let alone actually having great internet speed with it.
In that case, I don't have to worry that much about connectivity, as 4G speeds are enough for me to do the basic tasks in my daily usage right now.

People already pay more for iPhones. Price cutting 5G phones would be a more interesting value proposition for buyers that may be on the fence.

This is good news for users who understand that 4G is enough for daily usage as they will be able to get good deals on existing phones. I realise that 5G is a big upgrade over 4G but most third world countries are yet to get the 5G service. In the end, it's good news for consumers.

The reason why 5G phones are not taking off, is all the moronic lies online about 5G and coronavirus. I worked in the mobile industry and if I have a pound for every story 2G/3G/4G/5G is bad for us. I be a millionaire LOL.

For buyers still living in a 4G market, this transition to 5G smartphones should have no negative impact on their smartphone need.

All 5G phones are also 4G phones. In general, a typically well-made 5G phone can function as a better 4G phone, in terms of thermal efficiency and modem performance. If you still live in a place without 5G service, you should start treating 5G phones as "a kind of" 4G phones. You are not paying any "5G premium" which is rapidly approaching zero. Before the end of 2020, we should see 5G phones priced competitively against 4G phones in all price segments (from $150 and up). The debate is still on whether we will see $100 5G smartphones by the end of 2020.

Fantastic for the ROG 2 if that goes down. None of the phones for 2020 have intrigued me. Unless HTC comes out with something, I'm good with the ROG 2 for a while.

The primary reason is that the demand for 4G phones, especially the high-flagship phones, is dropping rapidly in the country. Phone-makers are dumping their 4G smartphone stocks.

As of the end of March, Xiaomi's stock of 4G phones has already reached zero for all models priced over 2000CNY (~$280). The remaining stock of phones (all 4G models below 2000CNY) will be liquidated in the coming weeks. Redmi 9 (MediaTek G80) and Redmi Note 9 (SD720G) are likely the two last 4G smartphones of Xiaomi, all smartphones from then on will be 5G. Yes, the upcoming 'Redmi Note 9 Pro' (to be announced in a few days) will be 5G. The 4G models in the current active line will be replaced by comparable 5G models, e.g., Redmi K30 (non-5G) will be replaced by Redmi K30S (5G), priced lower than Redmi K30 5G (SD765G). The Redmi K30 series will therefore consists of four 5G models.

For Vivo, the only 4G phones will be 're-purposed' phones from already released 4G models.

Great news, because I'm not interested in these overpriced 5g phones. 5g is worthless right now and just another ploy to charge higher prices for a tech in it's infancy.

Lu Weibing (VP of Xiaomi) said (half jokingly): from May, 2020, Xiaomi will be a real 5G phone-makers: We make only 5G phones and we sell only 5G phones.

maybe if you live in a first world country where the companies ship their phones instead of selling them for higher prices on aliexpress, ebay and others due to the website taking a cut of the sales.

Strangely they have become more expensive after 1 January. Why should not they get pricier? The demand is less the production is slowing. Maybe the old models will get great discount but I think the new models will get more expensive than it should.
