CEO posts OnePlus 8 Pro night time photos, compares them against another phone

09 April 2020
The 48MP sensor supports 4-in-1 pixel binning, which was used in the wide-angle shot. There's also a telephoto sample.

Anonymous, 09 Apr 2020Yes, but then people should stop putting blame on the phone... moreYeah but it isn't just ISO+shutter that make night mode, it is a lot of AI and other phone auto post processing that are well beyond user's access.
It is a smartphone specific thing, as you said, camera have way superior capabilities compared to smartphones, that's because the raw image is significantly better thanks to a bigger sensor and less compact optics, Smartphones need to compensate with a lot of software as the RAW image isn't good enough, but thanks to that, modern and good camera phone now get really close in quality to entry and middle range cameras.

And what make night mode is all the software part working to enhance the picture, and this software is not just a small part but a totally integrated feature of the phone, and we can judge a phone based on its RAW and software enhanced quality, when the camera software get an update we need to reevaluate is quality.

And that's the issue, the regular or auto mode is not good for low light, and rather than having a dynamic light condition improvement to simply keep the phone capable of outputting the same visibility as human eyes, they rather implement a regular mode and a night mode...
Regular mode is good for good light conditions and night mode only when you need to clearly see something in the dark regardless of the art, realism and natural look...

A sensor can make or break a phone, but the software part is even more important here...
Which is also why all the additional sensors such as ToF, monochrome and other sensors are so important, because they gather all the important data the software need to improve the picture quality.

So when user have no access to anything remotely acceptable in raw performance, forcing them to push ISO and shutter to the max, and still not getting to capture things we still see with our naked eyes, they can't be blamed for pushing it that much which also cause the degradation...

That's why we need a low light mode which would improve low light visibility, the same way night mode allow a kind of night vision by being able to gather more light than the human eye can do and therefor being able to get a more luminous picture, a low light mode that would allow to simply push the raw performance at a level high enough so we don't need to push ISO and shutter time to the maximum.

I am not a picture expert, far from that, but I still think I am right here.

    AnonD-754814, 09 Apr 2020Then we lose the color.RGB + mono with same FL like P10 and XZ2P.

Cameras with 23-26mm lenses can capture a lot of the frame. I think it is waste of money/space to dedicated a huge sensor for ultra wide instead of monochrome wide.

Much better to have a 1/1.7" RGB + 1/1.7" mono working together than 1/1.5" ultra wide.
Mono can catch 3x more light than RGB of same size.

It is ridiculous that Mate 30 Pro got much lower score for Ultra Wide than phones using 1/3.4" ultra wide, and P40 Pro using same 1/1.5 does not have highest UWA score.

1/2.3 or 1/2.6 more than enough for uwa.

I know iso1000 will ruin my photo.
If I still use it, that's on me.
      I cant blame the phone.

I read all reviews and see ppl complaining about night photos.
Then I see many photos are iso1200, 3200 or more.
Of course they will look trash this way.

It is a phone, not camera that can still give an excelent photo using iso6400 and shutter 1/16s, while phones are becoming unusable at iso640.

jordying, 09 Apr 2020bullshit photo's, its the exect same phote but the oneplus ... moreOh we don't know about it, just wait for a true real-world review.

I must admit that I am actually impressed with the OP8 Pro's photo quality compared to that unknown flagship. Definitely will be eyeing the OP8 Pro.

Anonymous, 09 Apr 2020If people want the best night photo their phones can take, ... moreTrue, but a lot of users don't even know what is ISO, phones are made to both offer that kind of control to advanced users and also being smart enough for users who don't know how to setup things...
But even there, the sensor low light capabilities is the issues on most phones, you start having so much noise if you try to push the ISO, and that is only if you can reach your goal anyway, and on many occasions when you want/need to take a quick picture of something being only here for few seconds, you can't take your time tweaking things...

Also, considering they have a 48MP sensor and that the main Oppo Find X2 special Sony IMX689 is also a 48MP sensor with excellent low light conditions capabilities, we might be surprised this time around, low light quality have become one of the essential photography characteristic, so I won't be surprised in they really put a lot into it.
But we'll see, maybe they will endup with a crappy normal low light conditions mode and a way too artificial and bright night mode, lacking the natural and desired middle part...

I didn't mean that a true night mode shouldn't be implemented, I just asked if what peoples want is a true night mode that allow night vision or a natural level of low light visibility like human eyes do and if a "night vision like" night mode was to be implemented they'd prefer it as an option after having a natural low light mode rather than as the main mode.

I am sure it is actually the second case, peoples prefer having a natural low light mode, AND a night vision mode rather than only a night vision, but I couldn't be sure, so I asked.
