1. Apple did not choose to have fewer items in the status bar: they had to BECAUSE the notch was so wide they couldn't fit anything else up there. Besides, having a narrower notch on android that allows more statusbar icons is more useful than the implementation in iOS.
2. both android and iOS have some apps that work with a notch and some that don't. Notch compatibility is not perfect on iOS and terrible on android. Notch compatibility is an issue that wouldn't have arisen in the first place if the iPhone didn't have a notch
3. Notch disabling varies between different android implementations but in fact most of them just copy the implementation from iOS anyway. Both Apple and iOS added this feature on 'popular request' because of how ugly the notch looks.

[deleted post]A good software can handle partial face recognition, that's exactly why I advocate the use of multiple biometric solutions.
The best is 3D Facial recognition with IR camera and dot projector + the AI developed by Qualcomm and Trinamix which can detect living skin cells from those two sensors.
Combine that with two regular camera (on each side to have 3D stereoscopy) an UV camera, IR and UV flash, depth camera and a laser scanner (whose job is to get a high precision scan of a small random part of the face to check with great accuracy the details).
Combine that with a great fingerprint scanner like the Qualcomm 3D Sonic Max or an equivalent that can read in 3D, scan deep enough into the skin to get heartbeat, but with good algorithms could also get the density of the fluid and object making sure it is something that have the same property as flesh and blood, it could even scan the distal phalanx which can add another level of security.
To just unlock the phone and do mondain tasks, partial face scanning would work, but when a more sensitive thing is accessed, a full face or the secondary biometric sensor is required, and for the most sensitive things (bank and other legal informations for example) could require both at once.
We really lack 3D facial recognition on Android, and this is a really nice thing to have, the 2D unsecured (but also unreliable) face unlock really need to be replaced by a full 3D variant.
Sadly, because there isn't enough phone with 3D facial recognition in the market, it doesn't evolve and it wouldn't be a good business decision to do so.
Many improvement could be done, from handling that on hardware level on a chip which would guarantee that we can't even reset the phone from the bootloader to many improvement on how Android handle biometric and security.
I really wish Apple will make an update that allow partial facial recognition, Android's 3D facial recognition depend on this !

But Apple products are no longer that overpriced as this time around they have tried to retain or slash prices. iPad Pro 2020 costs the same, MacBook Air costs $100 less (and even lesser for students). iPhone 11 costs $50 cheaper. Of course specs of some Apple products aren't interesting, but they at least come with good build quality across the board (except the past where they have screwed up iPhones with bendgate).
Just look at Samsung S20 with $100 price increase and 120Hz display that no one asked for (90Hz is enough, because of significant battery drain). Also comes with weak Exynos chipset that overheats quickly even in nondemanding games. Rubbish cameras that can't autofocus properly (also happens in my S10).
This time Mi 10 is worth the money more than the S20.

I think as there is no to very little price increase of the iPhone 12 (except for 5G), this phone will be another huge success. I admit the notch on the 11 and older are somewhat intrusive, but they could make full use of that notch. I also expect 120Hz displays in the Pro models.
Just look what Samsung has done to its S20. Increase price by a large margin ($100), pair it with underpowered Exynos chipset, and install failing cameras with poor AF and bad color rendition.
Even Chinese OEMs especially Huawei P30 beat the S10. iPhone XR/XS and 11/11 Pro also beat the S10/S20.

Before anyone complain about Apple's notch, it is NOT the same as the Android notch.
Notch on Apple and Android are day and night.
On Android you have notification and statut icons up there, the notch is literally a dent into the display reducing the useful space of this vital part of Android, all that for a single camera (sometime a little more, but not often that there is something else).
Many apps had (and lots still have) compatibility issue with the notch/hole where many design/UI elements could be hidden, and having various size notches and multiple hole positions and width make the matter worse.
On the other hand, in an iPhone, the statut bar isn't really populated and doesn't give vital informations in big numbers, the notch is more a bezel squeezed in the center with additional display on the side to push the statut bar which leave the rest of the display full of use (unlike say the iPhone 8 and its predecessors where the statut bar took space IN the display where non fullscreen apps couldn't show anything), and the space of the notch is greatly used with lots of sensors.
Also, no apps suffer from the notch which have a controlled size.
So Android :
Made us loose lots of sensors that were on the top bezel before the notch appeared and make us loose display space while damaging the display useful space and clashing with notifications, status icons and some apps.
iOS :
Make the phone gain more usable display space compared to a bezel without negatively affecting any functional aspect of the phone and being perfectly compatible with everything.
Also, disabling the notch on iPhone is literally just making the background black, but the usefulness of getting the statut icons out of the display is still there.
On Android, disabling the notch literally render inoperative the whole part of the display where it is located, no notification or statut icons get advantage of that space which is basically dead...
Apple put notch disabling feature because of popular request, Google did it on Android because the notch made such a mess that many users needed a way to get away from that...
Apple implementation of notch :
Useful, have a real purpose, aesthetically debatable but functional, is a design element making those phone unique and identifiable, regardless how it look, the idea and how it work is really a great job, amazing sensor density making it really useful.
Android implementation of notch :
Useless, the bezel was way more useful, a bezel/display mix would have been way better, aesthetically the same as on iPhone, caused modern Android phone to have lost all useful front facing sensors, intrusive and broke many things, including the notification/statut bar, have only been implemented to copy Apple and for no other reasons without even thinking if it is a good idea or not, the worse possible sensor density making it a invasive thing with negative aspect and no real positive aspects.
Despite that, Apple made the notch smaller and still as useful as its previous iterations (if the leak is true).
I am not an Apple fanboy, I barely touched like 10 minutes combined an iPhone in my life and I don't want one, but I consider their notch a really great idea, but only on iOS who doesn't rely on the statut bar for showing important informations, it already can show all required informations with the first big notch...
On Android, even the teardrop notch or the hole have negative impact, making them smaller to reduce their effect on the display and loosing all sensors is literally the opposite of what Apple did, and they did it for a reason, they improve it, on Android they didn't thought it, they try to compensate/fix it, that's a HUGE difference, don't be fooled, this notch have nothing to do with Android's notches.
