Additional issues surface regarding OnePlus 8 Pro display

24 April 2020
The issues range from black crush, image retention, and color tints at low brightness.

Sort by:

I have a bad feeling that Find X2 Pro that should be using the same panel as OnePlus 8 Pro might suffer from the same fate. I'm not quite sure if they can do anything about the black crushing, but hopefully green tint in lower brightness level is something they can patch up in the future software updates (like the one on S20 series).

Anonymous, 25 Apr 2020I don't understand how people really like LED type screen..... moreOled, not LED, that's totally different despite what the name imply, officially "LED" is used to refer to display with LED backlighting.
Oled offer many advantages over LCD, this doesn't mean it is better, each have their pros and cons, at the end it depend on user choice.
Depending on their implantation, either of the two can be a lot better than the other.
Real LED display are coming in the form of MiniLed and MicroLed with only potential contender outside lithography produced Led is nanotechnology based display, such as graphene display :

PartTimePhoner, 24 Apr 2020What do you think about the A80-Asus Zenfone 6 style?I saw and tested the camera on the A80 in a shop, my girlfriend didn't like this system, and I don't know, if it had 3D Facial Recognition sensors (and flagship specs) I'd buy it, but here it is more a motorized slider than a pop up, same as the old Oppo Find X (which is the only pop up/motorized slider phone to have any 3D facial recognition by the way), sadly slider s do really have water issue (the A80 have enough water resistance, but other can have proven to leak even with just rain).
Same for the Zenfone 6, could be nice, but with only 2 camera/no 3D Facial recognition, I don't really want that.
Any pop up/slider/flip camera which doesn't come with 3D Facial recognition isn't worth it, making all that just for having a camera up someone's face isn't the best idea as those system have for advantage to allow many sensors without affecting display size...

The same problem had Huawei Mate 20 pro when came out on the market but not all models.
They produce with two model's of an oled. LG and BOE
The one with the LG display had the same issue like One 8 Pro have now and the other with BOE display at Mate 20 pro was little less bright but without any issue, like green tint or red.
Maybe they make the same mistake with their phones by puting inside faulty LG display's.
Who knows in wich way is going mobile industry with so much Competition around and lowering the prices for flagship phones to be more affordable.

Having amazing 3D view and object manipulation, privacy and getting rid of front camera while having fulldisplay on the front would be the most desirable thing for me for any smartphone device.

PartTimePhoner, 24 Apr 2020Tell me, what can they do with an underdisplay camera they ... moreThat's the opposite, underdisplay camera have tons of issues inherent with what they are, you can compensate them but only up to a certain point, that why I consider them as bad as notch and punch hole, even though if they don't remove a part of the display.

*1 They will gonna be another invasive trend like the punch hole, leaving little space for other alternatives, such as bezel, pop up, slider, no front camera, etc.

*2 They are really complicated and expensive to make, R&D of multiple companies spend years and millions to make prototypes that don't give acceptable quality for any user into photography, and they are still gonna cost a lot to produce as it require complexe, precise and expensive display and sensor processing and an ever evolving software to compensate.

*3 What need compensation is both the display and picture quality, you'll always need to find a balance between transparent display which loose many characteristics relative to the rest of the display around it (contrast, level of black, how it behave on light, etc) and a camera that see through it, which will always get reduced quality, all the shots made from underdisplay camera show many artifacts that prove the huge majority of the picture is generated by AI rather than RAW informations, so you choose either to have a poor display quality and a good picture quality, or a good display quality and a bad picture quality, or each having something between good and bad quality.

*4 They reinforce trend of always "visible" camera that don't offer any privacy, which is way more important than any convenience or design of any smartphone.

*5 There is no guarantee that any underdisplay camera unit will be produced with good enough quality to hit the market, meaning all the money spend on that will make price of every other devices increase for compensation, and even if it get produced, just to compensate all the R&D, the price will be quite inflated compared to a pop up or a bezel.

*6 Their only reason to exist is a mix between peoples absolutely wanting a front facing camera and people wanting fulldisplay screen, pop up already do a better job at that and pop up mechanism can be improved by a lot, including making them IP68 compliant, having virtually no moving part except the pop up itself, having almost no kind of wear, etc...
Yet for some strange reasons, people don't consider pop up camera which allow to have fulldisplay as a solution to get fulldisplay...But rather as a "fix" while waiting for underdisplay camera to come, meaning the underdisplay camera risk to totally kill the pop up, which actually is better in every ways compared to the underdisplay camera (when looking at the reality and not at the theory).

*7 Because of whatever is put under a display will always loose quality, the RAW quality itself isn't enough for a reliable and effective implementation of any 3D facial recognition sensor, which continue the trend caused by Android notch and punch hole to remove every useful sensors and only leaving the camera and a downgraded (too small) version of both ambiant light and proximity sensors.

So they can't do anything with underdisplay camera that other camera can't do, other front camera implementation are actually better in virtually every ways.

Hyped as the best display, this thing hasn't even reached out to a lot many users like in the case of S20 series which has fewer problems than the Chinese OnePlus.
Displaymate and almost all Mobile Phone "journalists" gave OP8 series 'The Best' rating only to see it fail massively.
That's what happens when you tinker around an already good display just for boasting. Ooooooh, 120Hz display makes it like this. You want a superb all day phone - get Asus ROG II or Samsung S10+
