Sony shows the Xperia 1 II camera and its Alpha-inspired features in detail

29 April 2020
Eye AF for humans and animals, 20fps continuous shooting with AE/AF enabled and a ZEISS lens with T* coating are just the tip of the iceberg.

Another Sony post, another drama to watch. It is a good phone but the vibe of the Sony fans on this website is really off-putting.

So, browser + battery + calling + essential-apps is all what the smartphones should care about (something decent is welcome but with no bold statements). Leave everything else to the dedicated h/w. This multi-purpose madness needs to end. More purposes bring more artifacts to compensate for usability limitation. Hope this makes sense to someone.

Anonymous, 29 Apr 2020I know DRO just lift the shadows at expense of more noise. ... moreSo many errors in your post, Mr L now Mr J.

First it is editing, not edition. Which edition are you talking about?
"But stacking a.k.a HDR+ will bright shadows more than they are in reality." It is brighten, not bright. You can change the exposure difference for HDR in professional cameras. I guess Sony doesn't give you that option in their fans' highly touted Manual mode.
"If you take an non-HDR photo and apply HDR on edition" You apply HDR on 2 or more exposures, not one single photo.
"Want better night photos? Do not let iso goes 800" Would you prefer a blurry shot that captures nothing recognisable or noisy shot that clearly shows the subject?

SLSAHXOHVOMVN, 30 Apr 2020Users should have the option, we are not in the tyrannical ... moreWe all know that the Xperia I mark II doesn't have a proper higher refresh like Samsung and OnePlus. But, it does offer 'Motion Blur Reduction' as they claiming on their website. Let's see how that plays out compared to others, I think it'll be similar to 90hz than 120hz. Personally, I think marketing 4K resolution is a better selling point than having a higher refresh rate though. I wished the phone did had a higher refresh rate, but hey maybe next year.

Other than that, I agree. I would like to see more options when it comes to display resolutions. If Windows can do it, why not Android?

But even though the telephoto lens is bringing in 161% more light, it's pixels are gathering half as much light as the main sensor. (1.4 um)² compared to (1 um)²

It looks great! Finally, Sony taking their camera game serious on their phones.

Anonymous, 29 Apr 2020I know DRO just lift the shadows at expense of more noise. ... moreIt's not about getting unrealistically bright shadows. When you expose manually for the highlights, many cameras will give you unrealistically dark shadows. So that's the important purpose of having shadows settings like the Pixel 4. Sony cameras have shadows settings, which are called DRO, but they need to improve these settings.

Exyvia, 30 Apr 2020As with all Telephotos at night, small sensors. Reason ... moreActually the sensor size is not the reason. For example the 2x camera of the iPhone 11 Pro captures approximately (6mm/2)² / (4.25mm/1.8)² = 161% as much light per time as a 2x crop of the main camera. The real reason is that 2x digital zoom only needs to read out 3.1 megapixels whereas the tele camera needs to read out 12.2 megapixels. More pixels mean more read noise, this can make the image quality worse in extreme low light conditions or dark shadow areas even when the camera captures more light. But if the 2x camera would capture (for example) 400% as much light per time as a 2x crop of the main camera, then there wouldn't be an issue and the extreme low-light image quality would be still better despite more pixels.
So how can Apple's 2x camera capture even more than 161% as much light per time? They don't necessarily need a large sensor (or large image circle). They just need a lens with a larger effective aperture diameter. Though when you use a small sensor area, it's difficult to create a lens with a large effective aperture diameter for a specific field of view. For a specific field of view, it's easier to create lenses with a large effective aperture diameter, when the sensor is larger. That's a reason why large sensors are associated with better low light image quality. When the field of view is the same, then a small sensor + small effective aperture diameter captures the amount of light per time as a large sensor combined with the same effective aperture diameter = focal length/ f-number.

All Sony has to do is to offer the option. Ppl like you can choose to run it at 4k60hz 24/7. While other can use it at 3k@120hz for general purpose use and switch to 4k@60hz when the content demands it. Everybody wins!

You're the one trying to win people over with your argument about being given the choice to reduce the display resolution to either 3k@120hz or 4k@60hz so users get a choice in settings as you say - though if you want to do that you must be prepared to see lower quality content because of that " user choice " you really eagerly want implemented.

Any content, whether it be a video or a still image will not be presented in all its glory if you downscale, reduce your screens' resolution and that extra hertz that you want will not help you in this case because the screen is running at reduced performance in the first place.
