For example; 4K content will look good on a native FHD screen though quality degradation will be visible if you run a downscaled FHD resolution on a native 4K display playing said 4K content.

How will users be robbed off the option of 4k?
Users get a choice in Settings.
3k@120hz or 4k@60hz.
Is that too difficult for you to understand?

Reason ... moreS20 ultra at night is superb with large imx 586 sensor. No competition!
Also not to forget the video capabilities through the telephoto sensor on S20 ultra.
Besides telephoto from Sony is way inferior compared to periscope zoom cams on other flagships in daytime as well. Solid 10x zoom images available form Find X2 pro, S20 ultra and P40 pro in daytime. That's why I called it garbage.
IPhone is complete garbage when it comes to telephoto and Ultrawide.

The could reduce to lower res, but then people would be unhappy they don't get true 4k experience. Lets face it, people like you could be given the ability to live forever from sony and you would still hate how it's implemented.

Having the option satisfies both parties, those who want to stick to 4k as well as those who want Higher refresh rate at the cost of slightly lower resolution. Besides that, Sony doesn't offer any other phone with higher refresh rate so you can't say this is for 4k only ppl. This is a general purpose 2020 flagship. With lack of those options, buyers are easily turned off by Sony and gravitate towards other brands. No wonder sony doing terrible in sales.
Higher refresh rate wins over useless battery hog 4k any day.

People pay for 4K, not QHD.
If someone pays for 4K and end up using QHD, this person is completely stupid.
Deal with it. Move on or keep crying until your brand has 4K, so you can be sure it is much better than QHD.

A dedicated 50mm for portraits which uses Samsung sensor with 1.4 micron pixel size.
Day or night, great portraits and 2x optical zoom.

With other phones, the main camera is excellent in quality while the ultrawide and telephoto have far inferior quality. This doesn't seem to be the case with this phone which looks like it will be providing consistent and similar quality across all focal lengths. As a photographer, this 16, 24, and 70 are absolutely PERFECT for me. Only camera enthusiasts will know what i mean when i say these are the "Holy Trinity" of lenses. I mean, you only need over 200mm if you are shooting sports or wildlife and those lenses are expensive af ($10,000+). However, i do understand that for that the majority of common people, the lack of advertising terms such as "3x zoom" or megapixel count can be a turn off. But for those if you who know, you know ;)

Second, Sony is not hiding anything. On the website at specifications page it clearly says 3x optical zoom.
Third, if zoom is your thing than yeah this is not a phone for you. This phone is for shooting moving objects and speed shooting something P40+ can't do. Nor 10 Mi Pro or S20 Ultra.

Except Samsung, all other use weak hardware for it. 8MP 1/3.6" or 1/4".
I would never pay $1400 for phones that have rear 8MP camera.
It is getting out of control. Soon we will see 6 or 8 rear cameras for different FL.

Horses for courses. If cameras are not your thing, the mobile phone world is your oyster. Way more options.

At least they are not using A7r4 to pretend photos are from this phone.
Like Samsung and Huawei use Nikon.
There are sites that compain of the lack of 50-80mm on phones that use only periscope.
Using 100 - 220mm for portrait is not good on phones.
Too close.
Gsmarena says Samsung has 4x, but Samsung says 5x.
Much worse than saying 2.9 is 3.
