Samsung Galaxy Note20's display to be capped at 60Hz refresh rate, only Note20+ gets 120Hz

The info comes from Samsung itself, allegedly.

Anonymous, 13 May 2020I really don't care about 120Hz displays. 60Hz refresh rate... moreYou're right. But you're ignoring that we're already at a high level of performance.
A Snapdragon 625 easily renders 60 fps @ full HD without even stressing its GPU, in the menus, so why do you believe that the latest SD 865/765 can't do 120 fps in menus and all?

Of course, not every app maker updates its interface to this trend, but I believe many can benefit from it.

The need of the hour is a flexible refresh rate, it should be from 30-120 Hz for performance and battery both. At certain triggers like screen touch, movement, game starting, animation starting, it should jump to 120Hz. and go back to 30 Hz when not needed.

I don't remember, but I saw a phone which registered even less than 10% change in battery life when using high refresh rate, a recent review on GSMArena...

Its quite possible we're looking at multiple models like Note 20e, Note 20, Note 20+ and so on.

In that case, I believe it is ok to have the lowest model go through cost cutting... But the mid rangers of the range Note 20, should not have 60Hz screen. Even a $80 phone has a 60Hz screen. We can't push things this far.

    Even 90Hz is better.

Willywagtails, 13 May 2020sounds like you've never experienced 90hertz or 120hertz.You probably didn't know standard definition CRT tvs 20 years ago have both the regular 60Hz 480i/480p and 120Hz 480i display mode. 120Hz in small phone screens is a wasteful exercise of power. It's like telling everyone they can see a significant between 350ppi phone screens and 500ppi+ at normal reading distances (9" - 10" away).

Fearghast, 13 May 2020You know your "play X fps video on Y Hz display", it does n... moreI know. It's an overly simplistic explanation of what's actually happening but it's easier to digest for most users here to drive home a point because it's something they can try doing and visually appreciate.

I'm not sure that if by telling them, "Displaying individual frames of a movie or video whether they be in 24fps or another frame rate is not actually a separate event from the screen refresh rate, which details how many times the display is able to redraw the entire screen containing the specific movie frame in question" would be easier for them to visualize.

Even on S20 ultra, difference is Same. 87% vs 97%.

Take your higher refresh rate consumes unnecessarily more battery propoganda somewhere else.

I have a standard Note 10 8/256, coming from Note 8. It's not perfect, but I've chosen it for being one of the smaller yet complete phone from last year and for the stylus I use everyday for taking quick notes. I consider and suggest it only with Samsung Protective Standing Cover: in this "configuration" it is to me the best form factor actually available on the market today (try that cover with your hands) and that's enough to forget all the new specs people "need" that are missing. It's fast enough, photos and videos are great and it's very robust (it fells on the floor at least once a day, with its cover). And battery last enough (or I just charge it 30 mins at lunch time and it's ready to go on till night). I cannot pretend more from a phone. I'm a filmaker and I even use its footage for professional works

I really don't care about 120Hz displays. 60Hz refresh rate is the limit of visual acuity. Anything higher than that is splitting hairs and has more to do with the app animation frame rate.

What people are seeing as 'smoothness' of 120Hz display rate has more to do with the frame rate of the app/window animations rather than the overkill 120Hz display refresh rate.
Playback a 24fps video in a 120Hz display and compare results with a 60fps video played back in a 60Hz display. Then playback a 60fps video in a 120Hz display and you'll see practically no significant improvement. It's not the display refresh rate but rather the app/window animation frame rate that matters more.
