Sony PlayStation 4 reaches 110 million sales

13 May 2020
That makes it the fourth most popular console of all times, but the top 3 are out of reach.

To be fair, it's the Second Most Sold Console of all time, after the PS2.

This isn't competing against the Nintendo DS and Nintendo Game Boy. Technically they shouldn't be called "Consoles" as that's more synonymous with Home/TV, but rather under the moniker of Handheld or Portables. Also this is a total sold, it's not for the PS4 standalone. It's the combined sales of the PS4 + PS4 Slim + PS4 Pro. That's the same case with the GameBoy (which includes the OG GameBoy, Game Boy Lite, and Game Boy Color), or even worse with the misleading DS (which also includes the DS Lite, DSi, 2DS, 3DS, New3DS, etc etc).

The PS2 was a case of perfect product, in the perfect place, at the perfect time.
Home PC's weren't great at graphics and games (plus expensive and less prevalent), DVD was just released, and people were looking for that Home Entertainment experience. Not the same conditions the PS4 released in, so that makes it more impressive. Same deal with the Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS Lite, and the PSP... there were not any smartphones out there for it to compete in.

The most impressive and surprising feat comes from the Nintendo Wii, which didn't have the hardware to compete against the Xbox, let alone the Xbox 360 and PS3. And many games weren't as good. But it had great marketing, mindshare, low-price, and gimmicks that ensured many people bought it, used it, got bored and let it collect dust next to the TV.

The only way the next TV Console can pass the PS2 level of success, is if it very successful in North America, Europe, and if they manage to also sell in India (lower expenditure) and China (locked-market).

Still loving my experience with my PS4 but Ill sure to get one of the newly console called PS5. But I guess waiting for 1 year or more after the release of PS5 would be the best time to buy. Price should drop!

Furthermore, a new console always lags behind the previous generation in the first year(s). Lack of sufficient units to sell is one of the factors. More importantly, software houses understand they can make more money from the larger installed base of the previous generation than the new console, thus making it harder to justify the purchase of the new console.

Time to reconsider playphone5 instead of xperia5/II. Price included.

Anonymous, 13 May 2020PS2 sold additional 50 million units after PS3 was released... moreYes, but you are talking about fkin PS2, that still has a big catalogue of games and received games way up to 2014. PS3 dropped like a rock and even before that sales slowed down a lot when PS4 arrived. Same happened to other consoles like Wii, PS1, Gamecube, Xbox 360, etc. PS2 was an exception, not a rule.

Like the PlayStation 2, expect new games even on its 10th year since release (probably last wave) then Sony winding down production in 2025 at around 130 million console, there is likely that Sony could release 3rd iteration of PlayStation 4,cheaper and simpler PlayStation 4, super slim

I know name of two brands that sell much less units than they claim they sold.
