Mediatek sux, 21 May 2020They do use a76 cores in 720g, even though just 2. Devices ... moreYou didn't understand Mediatek's design...and the goal of this one...

In these years, big.LITTLE was the core arrangement...with cortex A72/73/53/35 (and A17/15/7) and standard Arm's design, you could do :
    - 4b+4L
    - 2b+4L
    - 4b+2L
    - 2b+2L
(In theory other things can be done with 1 or 3, but I've never seen)
A design with 2A73+6A53 was impossible to do with the two clusters allowed by big.LITTLE...
Mediatek changed Arm's design and managed to add a third cluster.
And if you test it for real it works well.
What is the so-called heating on X20? Only 6% performances drop in 10 minutes with the 10 CPU cores running at same time with TSMC's 20nm. Big cores start oscilliating between 1.8 and 2.1Ghz?(Tested on Vernee Apollo Lite...I think you can be surprised, isn't it?)
With the same TSMC's 20nm, in 2 minutes, all 4 Cortex A57 are off-line to 0 mhz on SD810. Results is around 60% performances drop.
Of course A57 is one part of the problem, but I doubt a 4A72+4A53 can handle performances as well unless using 16nm. On SD652, in 4 or maybe 5 minutes, all big cores are off-line)

About X30, it's probably one of the most underrated soc...in addition of Cortex A73 and A53, you've got smaller and more efficient Cortex A35...
Deserved a far better success. Seen only on Meizu Pro 7 high edition and 7 Plus. Most websites from western countries wrote articles about standard Pro 7 with mid range helio P25 (SD625's competitor)

    Today it's no longer big.LITTLE, it's DynamIQ.
When many websites (a few one understood what is DynamIQ) talk about tri-clusters for Snapdragon 865...they are technically wrong.
It's a single cluster of heterogeneous cores.
DynamIQ's cluster allows up to 8 cores, no matter if these cores are different.
You can do for exemple 2+6 in a single cluster...but you can't put 10 cores in it.
One of the avantage is the main cache shared between all cores.
That's why Mediatek dropped 10 cores solution...DynamIQ only allows 8 cores and you don't need additionnal clusters to make 2+6. A second cluster means a second cache and cluster migration that costs time.
    It concerne only A55/75/76/77.
For exemple, if you look at SD665 (released after the 2+6 SD710), it uses 4A73+4A53
I think the only company who copied Mediatek's tri-clusters was Samsung on 2+4+2 Exynos 7885 and 7904 (badly in my opinion!)

Mediatek's was a pioneer with this kind of assymetric designs...2 years before Arm...with A72 and A73
But with A75 and Arm's DynamIQ, tri-cluster became obsolete

Qwerty2020, 21 May 2020SD765/G & SD768/G are just overpriced & overestimat... moreThey do use a76 cores in 720g, even though just 2. Devices that and dimensity 800 would be same price. But yeah mediatek and kirin really are better choices even over 765/8.

They did copy the 3 cluster cpu but they did it better in the 855/+ and now 865. Huawei also copied it since 980. Those designs are better than whatever mediatek made in the past. Looks like mediatek still cant get that 3 cluster designs right, since it seems like they gave up on that. It would have been a great for boasting high single core scores on geekbench.

VKulkarno, 21 May 2020First 5G Redmi phone with the mediaTek 820 chipset. This is... moreSD765/G & SD768/G are just overpriced & overestimated SoC.
          How can a SoC with 1 A76 +1 A76 + 6 A55 be ANY DIFFERENT that 2 A76 + 6 A55?

On the other hand, MediaTek dare to offer 4cores A76 which is relatively new, in mid-range SoC; something that Qualcomm don't even dream of, as they keep using aging A73 for mid-range SoC, which is sad.

Let's see if Qualcomm dares to release mid-range SoC with the same config as Dimensity 800series, as it will directly impact the sales of all their mid-range offering

Anonymous, 20 May 2020A recent round of testing results circulating on various fo... moreQualcomm's mid-range SoC are downright half-assed product.
            They either used the aging Cortex A73 + Cortex A53 combination (SD460, SD632, SD636, SD662, SD665), or 2cores Cortex A75 + 6cores Cortex A55 (SD670, SD710, SD712).

            Even their 'premium' mid-range SoC only offer 2cores Cortex A76 + 6cores Cortex A55 (SD675, SD 720G, SD730/G).
            What's more embarrassing is they shamelessly offering 3-clusters config copied from MediaTek Helio X Series (Helio X20series & X30) from 2015, such as SD765/G & SD768/G with ABSURD config (1core A76 + 1core A76 + 6cores A55)!

Now, Helio G & P series (except P60 & P70), cannot compete with SD 6xx & 7xx series, as they don't offer advantage over Qualcomm's, that's why with the introduction of Dimensity 800 series which offer 4cores Cortex A76, which is similar to SD855, no mid-range SoC can match MediaTek ATM.
In high-end ones, Dimensity 1000series outperformed SD855+; nearly reached SD865 level for a fraction of SD865 prices. If Qualcomm doesn't interfere with MediaTek sales, I believed Dimensity series will be the next AMD in near future.

First 5G Redmi phone with the mediaTek 820 chipset. This is going to give 765G a run for its money and popularity.

A recent round of testing results circulating on various forums seem to indicate that D820 really crush all SD765G based phones by a surprisingly large margin. It appears all phone-makers who have had their hands on these Dimensity SoCs have all reached more or less that same conclusion: MediaTek is really on its way to overtake Qualcomm, starting with the mid-ranger segment (D800, D820) and the near-flagship segment (D1000+). For the mid-ranger segment, SD765G (SD768G) will be mostly, if not totally, replaced by Dimensity SoCs. A very long list of Dimensity SoC based phones from all phone-makers will be forthcoming in the weeks ahead. It is almost certain that MediaTek will outsell Qualcomm, at least in 5G phone segment, for 2020.

I expected to see the position of the 720G and the new 768G

Hamed, 19 May 2020I don't understand their naming system! We have the Redmi ... moreThe naming is a good reflection of Xiaomi's targeted marketing. Xiaomi had one and only one target in mind when they started designing this series, i.e., the upcoming Honor 10X series. What would be better than naming this series Redmi 10X, i.e., Redmi 10X vs Honor 10X? (After 'Redmi 10X' was announced, Honor changed its series to Honor X10 instead.) But the interesting parallel between the two series is still there for everyone to see:
                          - Redmi 10X vs Honor X10;
                          - Dimensity 820 vs Kirin 820. (Do you think the renaming of D800+ to D820 is an accident?)

You should see more parallel when the starting prices are announced:
                          - 1899CNY vs 1899CNY?

2020 is the year UNO for 5G smartphones, with 5G smartphones starting to outsell 4G smartphones in some critical markets. While 5G infrastructure is still non-existent or primitive in most parts of the world, a transition from 4G phone to 5G phone has already irreversibly started. The smartphone world has started to shift its development focus on 5G and the emerging 5G ecosystem of which the smartphone ecosystem is a very small part.

As we approach the end of 2020, the choice for your smartphone will start to move towards a 5G smartphone, regardless whether you are in a 4G market or a 5G market. At least for the mid-rangers and below, "5G phone premium", if any, will approach zero and being replaced with "5G phone bonus", by the end of 2020. In other words, for the same price, 5G phones will be better spec'd than 4G phones; and for phones with comparable specifications, 5G phones will be priced lower than 4G phones.
