From what I've heard, 5 -15% degradation is considered likely, per year. So the bigger the battery, the more you have left. So the starting size does matter. How you use it does vary the degradation, obviously. But even a babied battery will lose power over time. It isn't just the percentage lost. Many claim that charging between the 30 and 80% range is optimal. Now, for a device with a huge battery, it's easier to keep it in that range. A phone with a tiny battery will be harder to manage.

But adequate is one of those words that does define the devices. It is a word that shouldn't be used for phones at the price these are/were. The competition do not put adequate batteries in, they put large batteries in. Batteries are a real selling point, and also a feature that keeps you with a brand. Look at the bigger Samsung's, and Huawei devices. Many won't buy for the Willy waving in regard to camera specs, be honest 99% of people can't tell a S10 from and S9 for photos, same with a Pixel 3 vs Pixel 4. Even my 2xl isn't that far off the performance of the Pixel 4. Now, Google released a device, with what is known to be one of the best stills cameras, but with a battery that was not on par with other phones. They sold it knowing the Achilles heel was the battery choices... Look how it worked out. Now, run the experiment again, changing ONLY the battery. Reviewers look at it, do their usual fawning over the camera, then mention that it's battery delivers two full days of heavy usage (exaggerated for purposes of illustration). If you think that wouldn't have been a game changer, then I can't help. Had they also included a wide angled lens in there too, and kept the wide angled selfie camera from the year before, then we are looking at a worthy flagship. We both know that a couple of execs would still be on the Google payroll, and all would be well.

I know Pixel may have made great strides in terms of the adaptive battery, but you would surely agree that more battery would be better? I'm not one of those that thinks the reviewers on YouTube are typical users. So if they get 4hrs SoT, I assume I'd get a little more. But, those same people review bigger battery phones, and get more, like 7hrs SoT. So again, I assume I'd get another 10%, or whatever.looking at what I know other family members get (quite a range of devices in our house) I'm able to get some good ideas on where I'd be for battery. In my family, we have several Samsung phones and Apple phones, a couple of Pixels too, and a couple more, so I'm able to get an idea. The sizes vary too. So for me, I know that the Pixel 3 and 4 just wouldn't work for me. For that form factor, I'd need 3300mA minimum. For the XL, 4000mA is my threshold. Google made mistakes with the battery offerings, even the head of devices, last October is rumoured to have lambasted the teams for their battery choices. Sadly, it was too late to fix. Yes, for a small percentage of users, the battery is ok, and services them. So let's say 20% have no issue. If they'd gone bigger, then it might have meant that 60% - 80% were serviced.

With an OLED screen, efficient processor and optimised operating system, the battery in this is perfectly adequate. As to its long term longevity, that really depends on the quality of the battery and the behavior of the user - something you can't possibly know to pass such a judgement.

                      If you are planning to use this phone for 2-3 years look elsewhere since the battery life will be worse with it only having 3000mAh.

I'm one of those that use my phone a little more. Though I'd say I was only a light user. Some of that use involves the camera and the hideous battery hog that is Snapchat. I browse a few hours per day and do a few more calls. I'm cool with people that manage with the phones, and am not knocking the purchasers, you do you. But if they're had 15% - 20% more battery in each, I'd be all over them. I'm not working, but when I did, I used the maps and sat nav a fair bit. Then a good bit of browsing, especially on the train. They need to do better, just so they snag more users, and in the process, make light users even better off. Hopefully the 4a and 4a XL (leaked today... Though I'm not 100%) will be ok. The 5 needs to properly up things. Though it's looking decidedly unpromising, as the processor is rumoured to be a 7 series.

                                I won't be missing that active edge feature personally. When I had my 3a I didn't use it.

                                  To all the battery comments: I own a pixel 4 for some weeks now. The battery is tiny, yes! Still it does a quite nice job of keeping you juiced throughout the average day. I easily get from 7am-11pm each day with: 90hz on, 1h of music, 0,5h of video, 0,5h of gaming, wifi ON, bluetooth ON, GPS ON, 1h of browsing, some texting, no calls.

                                  Of course the battery need to be bigger than 3500mAh nowadays and only google knows why they don't pack a bigger battery. Still, their battery-software-enhancement is stronger than one would believe and it learns how yo uuse your phone, so don't judge by influencers who didn't use the phone longer than 2 weeks.
                                  Also: Most people are NOT powerusers and do eventually charge their phone every day. It's perfect for the average user. My wife for example charges her pixel 3 every 2 days, while I have to charge the pixel 4 (they both have quite equal screen on times) every night. It really depends on your liking.

Been thinking about upgrading since my cracked-screen Galay S8 is buggy when touch-typing and replacing glass on it is around 120 euros if done by pro. Might as well try and botch it myself with 10$ worth of parts, but that wont hold me off looking into Pixel 4A and/or iPhone 12 5.4".

But the devices are notoriously poor for battery performance. As the product launches have tapered off a little due to covid, a lot of reviewers are revisiting the Pixel phones. Of the ones I have read or viewed, while some say it improved, most claim that it is still dire. I don't believe everything I read, and I do understand that each use case is truly unique, but the trend is clear. Of those that said it was ok (and I don't perceive an "ok" to be a particularly glowing endorsement), most I found were still obviously from low use users. Truth be told, I want users to be saying how great it is, not that "it's ok" or its "fine". The poor battery is enough for some, and I'm happy for them. In the same way that although Samsung's 108mp camera with Pluto photography is good for some, I just thought it was tosh. I'm a low to medium user, don't have many social media accounts, so I want one that lasts a long time, to cover the times when I need to ramp up my use.

My GF has an S10e, gotta be honest, her battery life isn't stellar. She is a light user, but has to charge again late afternoon. Though it is a beauty to hold, really nice form factor. I'd have like to see wireless charging, but then it would be pretty darn close to the Pixel 5, so I understand why it won't be in. Should have it though, would then encourage to make a proper flagship.
