Wisse, 05 Jun 2012Roll-to-roll is not how Corning manufactures Willow glass, ... more@Wisse Actually that is exactly how it's manufacturer and that's why it's cheaper too. The compound that makes up Willow Glass is made as thin high heat Gorilla Glass, as possible, while adding thin layers of flexible ultra crystalline clear Infino Brand PC (Polycarbonate) made by Samsung Cheil Chemical to either side.
This is all they need for the majority of screens it'll be used on. Which will mainly be Samsung curved screen TV's. Most likely LG will be using it too.
This isn't pure Infino PC screen with single layer of Graphene applied that'll be used in Samsung YOUM Screen production. Although they'll be able to apply a polymer coating on smaller mobile device screens or TVs for added durability against scratching, Willow Glass can still be broken if you hit it with a hammer or try to bend it in half like a crease.
Unlike Graphene Coated Infino Brand PC formulated for YOUM Totally Unbreakable Screens that can be bent, hit with a hammer, creased, set on fire and whatever else you can throw at it and it won't break. Because Graphene will be one of the greatest discoveries of this century. Found by accident by Kostya Novoselov and Pro. Geim while working on transistors made from graphite: "The bonds between its carbon atoms also allowed it to bend and stretch, imbuing a material 'harder than diamond' with enormous flexibility."

But.... Samsung is working with Corning on applying this single atom thickness of graphene to pre-cut Willow Glass for it's next generation in a few years itself. Making it the thinnest and strongest glass (much harder than sapphire crystal even) ever made!
BTW... Samsung is now majority owner of Corning too!!!

Haha. Nice 3D rendering video from Corning.
And then tons of comments here on GsmArena on how well does it withstand shock. Wouldn't it be better if Corning would show us their Willow Glass' tests? Even better with old Gorilla glass next to the new Willow glass.

Roll-to-roll is not how Corning manufactures Willow glass, at least they never claimed that anyway.
Roll-to-roll is meant to show how this glass could be processed (to make displays and such) due to its flexibility.

digital_cristian, 04 Jun 2012If the new Gorilla Glass will be flexible, then the LCD uni... moreobviously this is for flexbile OLED displays, the prototypes of which we have seen..

devilsdad, 04 Jun 2012whatever they say, it all breakesyes it will break..
but when?
its not unbreakable... its just less prone to break easily .. in other words, its break resistant

Guys...did you forget the phone which tony stark used in Iron Man 2, In scene where Tony Stark was pitted against Hamilton industries to prove the wroth and exclusivity of the Iron man suit. He uses this phone to send the data over wifi to a projector.

yeah.. it will break, at least the inner unit due to the glass flexibility in case of head crash.

"It also remains a mystery whether the Willow Glass displays will bend when pressed like the resistive touchscreens of old".
Bad developer, very bad.

Plastic resistive screens were great if you dropped the phone, as they didn't shatter. Not so good for touch though.
Would be great if Willow Glass will flex on impact like plastic to avoid breakage, as well as be a good substrate for capacitive touch. Best of both worlds!

digital_cristian, 04 Jun 2012If the new Gorilla Glass will be flexible, then the LCD uni... morewoow...did you find this site today???
i have to ask because i have been reading about flexible screens for more then 2 years but this is the first i'm hearing of something to protect them....this is a true revolution, surely this will help the cellphones get more possibility and in the future flexible if you want..but ass well i want to point out samsungs oled display that's not only flexible and can take much damage but it's just that a superamoled display... i figured you didn't know that since you seems to think that flexible display's don't exist?

This is optimal as scratch protection for foil OLED displays. No more glass to break in a sub 0.5mm sandwich - nice!
