For some weird reason for some tracks I was able to play DSD upto DSD 128 in the default music player natively. It never worked for the DSD 256 though. When it works I can see a special badge in the top left of the track being played such as [DSD] DSF 128 5.6Mhz.

So it seems LG have dropped native DSD playback from its default audio player. Though DSD support is still present in hardware level (QuadDAC), LG needs to bore a tunnel through different software layers from the player to the DAC to achieve native DSD playback capability. It takes time, effort & money. GPM is able to play as it is converting from DSD to PCM at software level rather feeding the raw DSD to the QuadDAC through the tunnel. In V20, V30, G7, V40 the raw DSD was fed from the default player to the QuadDAC through the tunnel for bit perfect conversion by the hardware DAC itself.
Good to know MQA support is still present in G8X.

When will the unlocked V40 Thinq (LM-V405QA) version receive Android 10? You would have thought LG would have updated the unlocked version of the V40 Thinq first.

Formats natively supported by the default music player:
Stereo 24BIT/352.8kHz
Stereo 24BIT/192kHz
Stereo 24BIT/96kHz
MQA stereo original resolution
Original CD 16BIT/44kHz
5.1 Surround 24BIT/96kHz
Formats NOT supported natively by the default music player:
Stereo DSD 256 11.2896Mbit/s
Stereo DSD 128 5.6448Mbit/s GPM
Stereo DSD 64 2.8224Mbit/s GPM
5.1 Surround DSD 64 2.8224Mbit/s GPM
GPM - Supported by Google Play Music, however. Not sure if it decodes properly though.
I'm going to post this to the main product page as well. Thanks.

1) If HD598's drive well with G8X, then the nature of DAC implementation has not changed with past LG flagship lineup. My V30+ can drive HD518 & Brainwavz HM5 (64 ohms) with ease.
2) Welcome to the LG music lover group.
3) Do try the beyerdynamics (80 ohms). It is not an issue with LG's QuadDAC as their are people who have tried with 300 ohms headphones. Do let me know the outcome.
4) Please do check and confirm if native DSD playback support is present with default music player.
5) Dynamically adjusting output gain with headphone impedance is a de-facto standard of all QuadDAC's. Some guys override it with an audio adapter with a built in resistor, I prefer the way it is.
6) QuadDACs open up after 50 ohms, the meat is available between 50~100 ohms.

It detects the impedence automatically & then provides the power accordingly.

1. Audio is surprisingly great through the headphone jack. Drives my senheisser 598 open back perfectly well. I feel more base & clarity with better highs compared to my fiio q1 m2.
2. This is my first LG.
3. My 598 are 50ohms. I have got another 80ohms beyerdynamics but I have not tested this on those yet. Same is the case my anorher pair i.e Fiio F9 Pro.
4. That I yet have to check. Will post here soon.
For now, Im totally enjoying the audio output. No more hassle of charging my fiio either. Great device overall!

1) How is audio through headphone jack?
2) If you own any previous LG flagship, any difference in terms of audio performance?
3) Can G8X drive high impedance headphones with ease like previous V30, V40?
4) Is native DSD audio playback support present in G8X's audio settings?
Don't worry, G8X will receive both Android 10 & Android 11 in near future.
