Domestoboto, 08 Jun 2020It would be far more embarrassing and damning (class action... moreYeah, sure, you mean like this imaginary argument that pop up are fragile and not durable while in reality it is a challenge to find any forum post about someone saying its pop up camera stopped working, and even in those cases a recalibration is often enough to make it good as new ?
Because last time I check, even if a pop up camera got stuck, people could still survive and use their phone like nothing happened.
You wrote that as if display, chips (SoC, memory, microcontrollers) or batteries never failed and were infinitely durable, that's cute.
Edit :
Also the Oppo Find X was an hybrid pop up/slider, not a true slider like the popular OnePlus 7(t) Pro that can get as large as the Vivo V17 Pro, but when the whole body move, it is a slider, not a pop up anymore, pop up are way better than sliders or than hybrids, and the Find X was literally one of the FIRST to have a pop up, things have changed since then, and many improvement can be done, like electromagnetic actuated pop up who have literally no wear and is virtually impossible to break.

They are just not durable enough (see Oppo Find X).

Here we go, the underdisplay camera cancer is about to begin...
Poor quality, software compensated images gathered from a highly sensitive camera stupidly put under an opaque surface and reinforcing the trend of no other sensors in the front than a single camera preventing secured 3D facial recognition and other biometrics like that to be optimally available on smartphones, while costing a lot because of both all the millions and years spent but also because of the price of the tech itself...
Exactly what we needed...
Pro tip :
Pop up camera are also "under display", they are just better as they get out of there to take REAL pictures with real, good raw quality, they cost so little that entry level smartphones can have them and they aren't stupid difficult to make as even little known brand made phones with them.
Maybe one day peoples would understand that the idea isn't to hide the camera from us but to hide ourselves from the camera, underdisplay camera is the worse threat for our wallets (the price of phones with those things will be ridiculous) and for our privacy.
But oh well, peoples are afraid of a single little electric motor, so...

Anonymous, 08 Jun 2020existed since 2018 with Vivo first pop-up camera...A lot of people don't like moving parts in their phones. Plus, you don't get IP certification on such phones. So not the same thing.
This under-display camera tech is definitely the future of flagship phones.

Whackcar, 08 Jun 2020Hopefully 2021 will be the year without notches & holes.I heard that's how phones were used to be made before the people were conditioned to hate on those functional/protective bezels.
Which were replaced by edges/bezel-less screens. Which end up getting covered by cases. Like glass backs.

If phones are getting this feature there better be software to have the very top edge or the very bottom edge of the display as a notification light or bar. Like how the Xperia ZR and Z2 had it. Also for extra security. Power going into the selfie camera has to go through some kind of LED to let you know if it is on. Placed at the very top edge of the display.

Anonymous, 08 Jun 2020like how they copy Sony 960fpsYeah they did that but they're inferior compared to Sony but hey, 960fps for everyone. Gone are the days where they buy $10k or rent $150 or more per hour for a high end Slow Mo camera.

Each innovation is welcome, but for my part the borders have never bothered me on the contrary they serve me to hold my smartphone well as I want.

"...this might bring a disruption of the quality of images - if everything else is in Full HD, this small circle might scale image quality back to HD or even SD." ~~Can't wait to pay 50 usd extra on the next phone with this technology just so I can have my screen glitchy and all sorts of f*cked up because somehow making the selfie camera small enough to fit into bezel (like Meizu 16T) is not "lit" or "cool" enough. Anyway let's update the ranking:
S tier: Tiny bezel with small selfie camera in it (eg Meizu 16S)
A tier: Pop-up cam (eg Xiaomi Mi 9T)
B tier: Waterdrop notch (eg Redmi 10X)
C tier: Old-school thick notch (eg iPhones) / single punch hole (eg Meizu 17)
D tier:
E tier: Thick bezel (iPhone SE 2020) / this kind of under-screen selfie camera that fcks up your screen (unknown devices)
F tier: Dual punch-hole (Realme X50)
