Well, for me, this is great news. I can't wait to get a phone with under display camera. Even though this might pose some minor quality problems early on, the technology is only going to get better and the difference between an under display camera and a traditional camera will be negligible or even impossible to differentiate with the naked eye. The same goes for the screen area which covers the camera.
Bring on the under display camera phones!

AnonD-909757, 08 Jun 2020Here we go, the underdisplay camera cancer is about to begi... moreYou said something that really resonated with me
The point on having a very sensitive camera
Why do manufacturers only add featured when there is something else to take away from it
Why can't ultra sensitive cameras be used now on the back of smartphones why do you get it only when ity has to be under a display.. crippled
Same thing with bigger batteries.. only added with bigger displays and higher screen refresh rates :/

Why is everyone so worried about the reliability of a motorized selfie camera, remember at least a video from VIVO with a ballerina ?! And what will the screen look like after a phone call when the phone is leaning against your ear ?!))) Will it be enough to let in light or will it need to be wiped immediately? Judging by the comments, writers here use a selfie camera from morning until late at night, practically without stopping.

I respect the progress of the technology
Have some concerns:
-Privacy
-durability
I remember the problems in screen Audio caused
What's going to happen to that area after repeated transition from transparency to opague
It's almost like the same durability issues with a pop up camera
And I'd argue its easier to fix a pop up camera.. you might have to replace the whole screen
Those.are my critques

-lower resolution: only at that part of the image, you won't notice it at the edge of the screen
-still less light: but the sensor can be much larger to compensate for that
-pop up camera: still a moving part, dust, water, banding, dropping, has to pop up for facial recognition, it's not the ultimate solution for sure

Anonymous, 08 Jun 2020"...this might bring a disruption of the quality of images ... moreI almost agree with what you said, I'd make little changes due to my preference of punch hole over notch. Also, you forgot phones with double screens and rotating cameras. So my personal list would look like this:
SS tier functionality and coolness factor, trash tier body solution: Double screens (nubia Z-20), wrap around screens (Mi Mix Alpha)
S+ tier: Flawless under-screen selfie camera of the future (might not exist for a long time)
S tier: Tiny bezel with small selfie camera in it (Meizu 16S)
A+ tier: Rotating camera that uses main cam as selfie cam (Zenfone 6)
A tier: Pop-up cam (Xiaomi Mi 9T)
B tier: Single punch hole (Meizu 17)
C tier: Waterdrop notch (Redmi 10X)
D tier: Dual punch-hole (Realme X50)
E tier: Thick bezel (iPhone SE 2020) / old-school thick notch (iPhone X)
F tier: This kind of under-screen selfie camera that f0cks up your screen (unknown devices)

NotAnOpinion, 08 Jun 2020Being FIRST does not equal being the BEST!But you can not be BEST at something before someone is FIRST.
You need innovation. Big companies will incorporate it at later point and will polish it to be great. But without those firsts nothing will change.

Anonymous, 08 Jun 2020"software compensated images"
Google's Pixel phones heav... moreEVERY smartphone rely on software compensated image, but the reason is because the sensors are too small on smartphone to get good enough raw quality, so many informations from additional sensors are extrapolated using AI to make the image look better and better, the goal is to enhance the quality, RAW image are still good.
Secondly, RAW image that pro camera capture aren't meant to be final products, post editing is part of the job and a really important step, but smartphones being sold to masses you can't expect users to use photoshop on each pictures to make the best out of it, that's why Smartphones use AI to determine scene and objects to automatically do that job for the users.
But underdisplay camera is a totally different story, we don't talk about trying to enhance a good quality image to the highest possible standard, we talk here about getting a really poor RAW quality and trying to hide all the defects and reconstitute a proper image from the horror that the RAW image is...
Regular smartphone camera doesn't look through an opaque screen, they don't need this kind of software fix, underdisplay camera do and this is one of the hardest challenge they have, the base image is so bad that they need to make a really good software to make it acceptable, and note that I didn't wrote "good" but "acceptable".

NotAnOpinion, 08 Jun 2020Visinox does not need any excuse to jack-up their prices. T... moreSorry to break it to you but after millions spend and years trying to get this gimmick work at a level where it can be acceptable for mass production, even if the price of production per unit was not high (and it will be so high your wallet will have nightmares about it, you might already start seeking professional help for the mental health of your wallet at this point), the price they will need to cover from all the expenses will make the device with underdisplay camera of any brand really expensive.
And by the way, the Mi Mix Alpha is releasing soon.

They are also state-run, so, there's really no excuse for their incompetent manufacturing woes and marketing.

[deleted post]Actually underdisplay camera DO cause a difference in display characteristic over where the camera is, because that part of the display need to allow light to get in, meaning it have different light traits, look at any underdisplay camera prototypes, they all have the spots where the camera are visible.
Underdisplay camera is a balance between poor display spot and poor camera's picture quality that tries to be compensated by software.

Whackcar, 08 Jun 2020A lot of people don't like moving parts in their phones. Pl... morePeoples doesn't even know why they don't want moving parts, it is only because someone once wrote it in an article and now everyone repeat it like a good sheep, in reality there isn't any drawback about moving parts, the introduction of gimbals camera and periscopic telephoto are a proof that the industry clearly don't mind adding moving parts.
Also IP rating is totally useless, it doesn't guarantee much, and the pop up can be actually made IP68 complient, but even there, remember than IP rating = water resistance and NOT waterproof, the difference is huge.
Underperforming scamera is the worse possible gimmick they found to increase the price and downgrade the quality so much they have a new stairway to capitalism heaven to make people pay extra for slight less worse quality over the extra money that the thing itself will cost.
