Sony adds Xperia 10 II to the Open Devices program

16 June 2020
AOSP binaries are now available for the phone and devs can start work on custom ROMs.

It means Sony recognize its poor track record in giving updates, so by open-sourcing the phone, it hopes independent developers will pick up the task

Black Mamba , 17 Jun 2020Security updates are overrated. Lol please, no it isn't. It's as relevant as water, you definitely need that.

It has layer to support Android apps in some terms but not fully. Great OS but terrible camera support. Jolla's Sailfish team uses and supports Sony's open devices but I don't think they have deep collaboration.

It is the Project that forced every major phone maker like BBK who were known to not update their phones to update more frequently (ranging from as early as Samsung to as late as LG kind of update frequency). It is the Project that made updating from old version to new version easier which is why no Android 8.0 phone from the start is still Android 8 but moved to Android 9 or 10.

Anonymous, 17 Jun 2020i need help please, will this phone get 2 android upgrades ... moreOnly one upgrade most likely. But what's the deal with Android upgrades? All the features they are introducing are of cosmetic nature and most of them never catch up with the developers. Last one that succeeded in being recognized across the whole platform is Dark system wide Mode. 11 is bringing bubbles, who cares about that? Whatever happened to contextual search where you can utilize application's actions? It's dead. That seemed useful but no one implemented such thing in their apps. Project Treble? Whatever happened to that? Not whole a lot.

From Android 8 (Oreo) and on very little useful stuff was introduced to users.

Is there a way to add higher FPS recording capabilities to the Xperia 1 mark II, since they skipped the feature this year?
I know 960FPS uses a dedicated memory chip, so it is a hardware limitation, but having only 1080p @ 120 is boring.... can we get 720@240 or software interpolation for more?

I didn't even know this phone was available to purchase. The price is pretty decent. A little on the high side, but this is Sony we're talking about. I can't find a good store to buy it in USA.

Anonymous, 16 Jun 2020It will never happen. Not unless Sony want too. If I remember correctly, Sailfish OS is a fork of Android/Linux so Android apps will definitely work on that OS. Since Sony's been a partner of Jolla's Sailfish OS for some time, I'm sure Sony will do that one day.
