It’s not excuse, it’s exact the reason. Lockdown happened earlier in China where 76% of these Huawei sales came. China is huge market. India which is big market for Samsung had hardly any sales in April for Samsung thanks to COVID. Very likely in May Samsung is already back to #1 spot. Because in May sales in China were down over 20% so April had some pent up demand for Chinese market.

I'm a Sony fanboi ... bought all their earlier compact phones.
I bought all Google's phones up to the Pixel 2 XL, only for the fast software updates.
Now, I buy a $200 phone, then change it every 8-12 months ... so that I will always have the latest Android version. Sell the old phone for cash, made a small loss.

I can speak about me and my family in Europe. We all switched from Samsung to Huawei this year. Not that Samsung phones are bad or anything, we've been using them for quite some time. It's just Huawei phones are outstanding. This whole theater with GMS is laughable. We are pretty much satisfied and for the normal user the absence of GMS doesn't change anything. I actually finally got to watch Youtube without the annoying parasitic ads.

about spying: my friend and i were talking about random artist which showed up on my feed in youtube later that day.
Definitely you can live without google services, which became sort of cancer.

Felt disappointed. Samsung should improve themselves. Introduce new GPU chips by AMD. And make better processors. Huawei did'nt deserve to reach the top spot. It should either be a Samsung or An Iphone.

Just my 2 cents: you can access full-featured Gmail and Youtube through the web browser. For photos and storage, MEGA (app) gives free 50 GB for basic accounts right off the bat. For consumer apps you won't be left in the lurch without GMS.
OT: For sure, either Whatsapp or Gboard itself spies on your conversations. Next time just try typing a specific/exotic keyword in your chat, and watch that topic show up in your Youtube feed. There have been reports on this already.
