It's just not very common as most phones are made of glass and metal these days, except for the cheaper ones where the added cost probably isn't justifiable.

All materials has limitations. Glass screens and backs can break pretty easily if you drop them from more than as couple feet. It's always been a question about what you want to trade off. Folding my phone into a size smaller than my wallet is a pretty good perk in my book, which is why I accepted that the screen is more sensitive than my old Note 9 and got the Z Flip.

I won't get one but the fact Samsung uses such technology on a smartphone excites me nonetheless, kinda reminiscent of LG G Flex's self-healing polycarbonate body back in 2013. That one had a great resistance against very fine scratches, but it would be interesting to see how Samsung's solution holds up against deeper cuts and wider dents (like the one you can create by pushing the display with your fingernail).

That definitely sounds fascinating, is there any source that claims so? Thanks.

actually used the phone not samsung's marketing department.
Anyway, I'm not saying by any mean that UTG is useless, in fact it was a good move to the right direction, but it's still a premature technology and even Samsung acknowledge that.

Flat and with consistent colours across the entire screen. To achieve this, with the magic bending, the glass will obviously have to be extremely thin. Ultra Thin, in fact. To protect it from damage they've applied a thin layer of self healing plastic on top. That plastic CAN NOT be pealed off unless you dismantle the entire phone first, because there's a protecting frame around the display edges.

AnonD-762416, 22 Jun 2020You damage the phone if you damage the phone? Shocking reve... moreLet me explain Mr. genius, the Galaxy Z Flip comes with an UTG screen, great, that is supposed to make the screen more scratch resistant, but that screen is protected with a plastic screen protector, not your typical screen protector no, it's part of the screen and you can't take it away (if you ever heard about a phone called Galaxy Fold you'll understand what I'm talking about). So even though they're using UTG, it doesn't make any difference because your going to be interacting with the plastic protector, and it scratches like, guess what, plastic.

If they do, hopefully they won't opt for misleading advertisement and make it sound like the glass will be the outermost layer that users will touch with their fingers. One company already got caught up in trouble because of this and I definitely don't want to see second or third companies following their suit.

When Samsung announced they were going to use UTG everyone said it isnt glass and as usual mad enegative comments towards Samsung.

I didn't know that the top plastic layer is self healing. Why didn't tech news sites or channels made that viral?

I didn't know a self-healing material is still in use and the last time I know about it was in LG G Flex series.

This is what you get when social media allows pathological liars make money for free.

My Z Flip definitely has UTG. The self-healing cover on top of the glass is there to protect the ultra thin sheet of glass from external damage. Notice I wrote self-healing? That finger nail scam JerryScamsEverything talks about didn't show it also healed from his finger nail stunt.

Before they say anything. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip does have Ultra Thin Glass as per JerryRigEverything in the Teardown video. But it seems that the display is like a laminate where the UTG is sandwiched between two plastics which is why you can still deform your display with your fingerprint. UTG can still crack and act like glass.

I hope Xiaomi and Huawei come up with a better design and form for their foldables.
