Apple's Macs are moving to ARM-based custom processors

22 June 2020
This move was rumored a lot, and a long time coming.

Kek, 22 Jun 2020Let's not fool ourselves here: the main goal of Apple with ... moreisnt that happening already, in steam, microsoft store, google store, app store....? even the PS5 has a no disc version of the console, where you download all your paid games, eventually that is where we are going, download all the paid app/games to our units and for the free app/games it will be ad base or in-games purchases

RIP native gaming on MacOS (you're going to be limited to Stadia or whatever streaming service that's completely at the mercy of your ISP for the foreseeable future) and Parallels (the only way to make a Mac usable is to put Windows in it)...

Genuinely interesting, i know W10 is also have ARM compatibility but they are intended toward mobile computing or tablets, will macs leaning toward this? half tablet half laptop bastards, probably a nice decision not to switch entirely to ARM for a decade or so, still releasing intel macs beside ARM macs alongside to see what will develop.

Pretty good move by Apple, this just shows that Apple wants to slowly but surely eliminating the middleman in their manufacturing in the long run. Apple moving to RISC is not in any way harder than, for example, Windows because Apple already have history of using RISC processors for their Mac way back when they're using PowerPC. Apple will succeed in this regard unlike Windows that made a flop with their Windows for ARM project.

They are already there. Of course, they're not quite i7 or threadripper levels of performance but should get there eventually.

Ryzen as well as pretty much all modern desktop PC CPUs are x86-64 architecture (64-bit) which is backwards compatible with the older x86 (32-bit) architecture.

Steve Ballmer in his sleep "i kneeeeewwwww it"

To be honest, Microsoft was always ahead of time. W8 was rewritten to run on ARM. Sadly it never worked because they abandoned the x86 app library. Stupid.

I doubt Apple will make it in time for app transition considering MS took 4 years to finish yet still doing the transition to arm-based apps.

Anonymous, 22 Jun 2020I guess many of you missed the last sentence of the article... moreMost of them are Apple haters and trolls who do not really know much.

This is great news for the whole Apple ecosystem and its developers. It is going to be so beautiful for developers to build apps and optimize for one chip architecture, this is what Google and Microsoft developers have been praying for and here is apple doing it in no time. :)

This is also great news for us customers who use Apple products, the apps, games etc... across platforms will be even more seamless and the haters will literally have no other choice but to envy :)

How long will it take for their ARM chips to out perform the intel chips for High-Performance MacBook Pro's?

I have a feeling many people will be unhappy when the macPro transition starts...

Putting mobile chips in fully blown computers is a dumb move.

Bad move from Apple, should have taken AMD Ryzen. ARM Chips are only X64, which means that it will lose even more game support than X86 chips, and possibly even Windows modding. Whether you are a casual, professional, or gamer, Windows is superior in almost every way, this isn't a preference. Apple lost the PC war a long time back.

MongoDB, Google, Facebook, Netflix... all run Macs on their centers and if you want other OS you will have to make a business case. If Microsoft moves to ARM that's it for Intel. Datacenters will be slowly replaced by ARM based servers.

Amazon,Microsoft, Google all have thousands of data centers catering to enterprise users. All these data centers rely 99% on x86 architecture and most, 90% are Intel based with AMD recently just making some gains.

If Mac's ARM architecture will cause issues there will be an Enterprise pushback towards Macs.

Also Big Enterprise is slow. One of my clients just started Win10 rollout this year and Macs are Forbidden in productive enviroments with the exception of HR or other fluff departments

I wouldn't know who ARM MacBook Pro would perform, so maybe I would hang on to the Intel MacBook Pro. Maybe Apple might get things wrong the first time out.

The model of pay to use and ads will be now implanted to Mac ARM PCs. All will evolve around the Apple Stores. Imagine the new Care programs for Mac ARMs... new prices, fees, taxes, more expensive customer services required for genuine parts, etc. Also the hackintosh dead. I see them finally active the hardware lock against everything not genuine-original after this move for all their products, including iPhones. It's a matter of time.
