Because it was eons ago fast charge didn't take temperature and charge level into account. As long as the charger and phone respects those limits it doesn't really wear the battery out any faster than a 5W dinosaur charger. They do get worn out, no matter what wattage you inject into them, just not anywhere near the same pace as they did 5-10 years ago.

I personally would like to get fast charging because I am willing to sacrifice the lifetime of the battery but I won't advocate for something false. No matter how the companies tell you about fast charging, it degrades battery faster.

I upgrade when my phone gets too slow or loses too much battery capacity and/or when I'm sufficiently jealous of new specs. Usually that's about two or three years. I don't want to have to upgrade my phone too much.

As 'old nokia' fan NiMH battery and barrel plug charge port, my pipedream would be
To own a 'gigabit 4g' (should work till 2050) smartphone for a DECADE OR TWO if it has LiYFePO4 battery(10 year life) with wireless charging (no port failure, but inducting coil capacitors will die in 10y), speakers, vibration motor, camera AF may fail sooner.

Fast Charge actually protects your battery as it slows down charging if the battery or phone gets hot. The Last generation phone I can remember suffering from battery damage due to charging was the S4 or Note4. Something so long ago I can't remember exactly which it was.

For me, until it ether breaks, gets lost / stolen, or fails to adequately provide some core functionality I need.
I literally went from a Nokia N-95 (regular version) to Meizu M2 Note.
Before the N-95 I was a sucker for every hot new phone that came out until I relised how much I was spending on them, in some cases buying a new one before paying off the previous one.
Except for the camera obviously,I was generally happy with the Meizu - until one day my dog saw a cat while I was holding the leash in the same hand. He bolted for it, and my M2 Note entered low Earth orbit (almost taking my arm with it) and then made an unsuccessful splashdown on the pavement.
Next was a Redmi Note 3 Pro, which lasted me much longer - until I got a car with Android Auto, and it was really sluggish on it so I upgraded to a Pocophone F1. Still rocking that one today. Gave the Redmi Note 3 to my friend that is a bit cash-strapped, and he loves it and uses it to this day. It still works and he isn't at all delicate with it. Sometimes he even uses it as a cutting board with a craft knife. lol
In the time of Corona especially, value for money matters I think.
Also, a lot of people are hurting financially, and it's not my style to flash phones that cost north of a thousand dollars in their faces when you can get just a little less phone for a lot less money, but that's just me.

Every time i purchase a new phone my curiosity always makes me compare the battery life with the previous device. Mate 9 has almost the same discharge compared with my p20 pro.
Same story compared the p20 pro with mate 20.
Couple of days I've purchased the p30 pro, and surprise, p20 pro has almost the same discharge like the p30 pro even after almost two years. All phones charged with the provided fast charging bricks.

ponk87, 05 Jul 2020my current phone is exactly 3 years old, hoping to get anot... more3 years because that is how long my phone will get security updates. My Pixel2 XL will most likely be replaced this fall. I have replaced the screen once (dropped on a concrete floor) and a new battery at about 1 and a half years. If I could get 4 or 5 years of security updates, I would keep the phone longer.

I have been using an Xperia XZ1 Compact since 2017 and I do not feel the need to have a new smartphone, they may have 120Hz screens, fast recharges and thousands of cameras but as long as the little Xperia does what I want ask without problem then i would stay with it until it turns off by itself, this is the best smartphone i have ever had.

At nearly $1000 for a top end phone, I replace mine only when battery life becomes unworkable or critical security updates are no longer made available. This usually works out to every 3 years or so.
