After tow years I begin thinking to change my phone if there's no major technology change like 800 nit brightness , 5g , Long lasting battery at Max brightness,...... Then I will change after 4 years (mid range segment)

Xperia x user since April 2017 with its original battery, still getting 5.5 h sot of gaming, web browsing and YouTube, plus i used to be a heavy gamer the last couple of years between pubg mobile, mobile legends, and clash of clans.

If over 60% of us here change phone in 2-3 years, then why are we always fighting "everyday" over Sony, Samsung and Apple?(etc ofcourse) But you see those 3 I mentioned? You've got to choose your words wisely

i work in r&d (optoelectronics + data processing, pretty much similar to smartphones industry...) and the funny thing i noticed? most of my colleagues have > 2-3 years old phones... :)))

Phone of 2018 : POCO F1, Note 9, Mate 20 Pro, Oneplus 6T, Honor View 20
Phone of 2019 : Note 10 Plus, ONEPLUS 7T PRO, Iphone 11 Pro, REDMI K20 PRO, REALME X2 PRO
Phone of mid 2020 : POCO F2 PRO, IPHONE SE 2020, S20 plus
Notice how even phones below $500 are sometimes better than $1000+++++ phones?
Because they do add things that certainly have an impact on your daily life, not ones that can be used to 'WOW' a person when they see itm

Me: I keep changing phones every month since 2019. I'm the single largest contributor to e waste. I've used almost all brands, from Apple, Samsung, Nokia, Huawei, Honor, Xiaomi, Vivo, Gionee, Realme, Asus, Jolla, Intex, Micromax, pretty much everything. Also used Symbian, Bada, Sailfish, iOS and Android except Windows Phone Operating System. God bless the nerd within me. Hope to survive 2020. Maybe.

My Favourite smartphones of each brand :
1. Samsung :
S20 Plus, S20, Note 10, A51, A71
Because they aren't doing things much wrong like the Ultra
2. Huawei
P40 Pro, Nova 5T, Honor 30 Pro+, Honor 30 Pro
Because they don't costs too much $1000++ but do things well for daily use
3. Apple
IPhone 11, XR, SE
Does 90% of what the $1000 iphones does in daily usage
4. Realme
X2 Pro, X50 Pro
Better than the X3 Superzoom, for lower price with the X3, u get the whole thing minus the 5x optical. X2 Pro even gives you an AMOLED 90hz,Stereo Speakers, 50W, Better design
5. Oppo
None, Find X2 Pro is bad, rather pick an Oneplus 8 Pro for $300 cheaper
6. Vivo
V19, Nex 3 5G
7. Xiaomi
Mi Note 10, Mi 10
Because Mi 10 Pro is a flagship yet lacks a couple of flagship features (IP rating, 4k video on selfie, QHD+ OLED, 1080p video not even stabilized

... moreIt's not that i agree or disagree, nothing you said is wrong but to me personally, i can't go back to a normal display after using 90hz, anything less seems laggy and it's not me being spoiled, you do get used to the high refresh rate that you get bothered by 60hz.
to be honest almost all phone users use their phones for social media and taking the random image here and there, i don't think they care about megapixel count or 100x zoom except the first week of owning a device with such features where the "WOW" factor is still fresh.
also i live in a country where most people would rather repair a device rather than buy a new one so they end up carrying it until it literally is beyond repair, i'm a tech savvy who if i had the money i'd be jumping on ever new gimmick especially foldables. but people like me are rare and since we're on a website for people who are hugely into smartphones and following the latest trends many won't agree with me, most people just enter a shop and buy whatever the salesperson gives them.
tl;dr:
"Periscope zooms, multi cameras, 5G, 8K, Glass back, Metal body, Super Fast Charging, Wireless Charging, IP Rating, High Refresh Rate, OLED, Stereo Speakers, Pop Up Camera, Curved Screen, Large camera sensors" are gimmicks true, but once you have them it's hard to go back to something without them.....
except the headphone jack BRING IT BACK phones were waterproof before it and i don't care about the 100mah of battery removing it is saving me, it's the only thing that is getting on my nerves and i hate bluetooth audio in all it's shapes and forms

You want to know hot to get a burn in on your phone?
Try this out ( Hope not, for experiment) :
Set your device to never sleep, display an colourful pictures for at least 10 hours ( go sleep). The next morning you wake, Voila, your screen has a burn in.

Why?
1. It doesn't push prices too high
2. It has the necessary things that consumers really need, not something for marketing but you don't use that much.
A. Wireless Charging, except for those who have the charging pads, many consumers who own a flagship charges it with wired anyway.
B. 8K video, Super Slow Mo, OLEDs, HRR (some do)
C. Pop Up camera for full screen experience, Punch Holes in phones and notches you just tend to forget them cause you are too distracted by the content you are looking or what you are doing
3. They have the necessary/enough battery to power your devoce for a whole day (Iphone SE doesn't)
4. They have the Powerful chipsets that can make the phone lasts longer so you don't need to switch phones often.

I used to change phones very frequently. But these days I don't find phones that much exciting. This time I'm excited though, after a long time. For the Xperia 1 II.

When does people(The average Consumer) buys a new phone:
1. If the current phone has problems
2. Memory is almost full/not enough
3. Phone is so slow and laggy
4. Battery is getting worse
5. Excited about a new phone that makes he/she want to leave the current phone
So, when people buy a new phone, they generally want to see improvements in :
1. Larger STORAGE
2. RAM
3. Better PROCESSOR
4. Better BATTERY
5. Phone with NO PROBLEMS
6. Definitely BETTER than his/her CURRENT PHONE
LAST :
Periscope zooms, multi cameras, 5G, 8K, Glass back, Metal body, Super Fast Charging, Wireless Charging, IP Rating, High Refresh Rate, OLED, Stereo Speakers, Pop Up Camera, Curved Screen, Large camera sensors
Those are just extra and not the first thing that 99% of what people wanted when they switch to a new device.Except for some people that are very excited to see improvements that change phones every year.

As to water & dust resistance, I don't understand it either. It's overrated IMO.

BTW, I owned LG G5; I planned to buy V20, but at that time, I could only get its sibling, G5, that's why I envy those who had V20 and still hold it.
Yeah, the LAST thing I need is to buy new phone as new battery is much more cheaper & the phone itself still works like champ (no need for 6GB, but need newer Android version, honestly).

every new galaxy s series i give them to my father mother or sister after i buy new one.
now im using s20 maybe i will change to note 20+ when it comes out
