The traditional flat-screen design will continue to be used for phones in lower-priced segment for cost reasons. All IPS LCD screens will still use the traditional flat-screen design.
For premium flagship, flagship, near-flagship, and premium mid-rangers, with OLED (AMOLED), we will have the following screen designs:
1. Quad-curved design (or its variants);
2. more conventional 2-side curved design;
3. mini-curve, near-flat design (achieved through a curved OLED).

The traditional unsightly flat-screen designs (with thick 4-sided dark-frame around the screen, as seen on iphone 11Pro) are on its way exiting the market for all phones priced $500 or higher.

JohnW1981, 11 Jul 2020I really don't get how or why the curved screen thing ... moreIt is an aesthetics consideration. People want curved design (as seen on P40Pro) because they want to get rid of the unsightly traditional flat-screen with thick 4-side dark-frame around the screen (as seen on iphone 11 pro). Take a careful look at the front of iphone 11Pro and P40Pro, you will understand the reason. (If you have a chance to do side-by-side comparison between iPhone 11Pro and OnePlus 8Pro, you will easily see the point.)
From a more functional point of view, the current wave of curved designs (P40Pro, Mi 10Pro, Find X2Pro, OnePlus 8Pro, etc) are not that different from a flat-screen: no distorted text, no accidental touch, etc.

I really don't get how or why the curved screen thing caught in the first place. I'm yet see a tablet, iPad, T.V or P.C monitor with a curved screen and its way less practical on a phone

Flat screen Mate 40x, bootloader unlock possible, and full screen display and I might consider this company again.
Sadly, tis but a dream...

YUKI93, 11 Jul 2020I'll be waiting to see the overall photo quality from ... moreIndeed Mate 30 was the best when it comes to balancing between sharpness & noise.
I believe P40 series using the same BM3D RAW noise reduction by Kirin 990 ISP, but the excessive sharpening & noise reduction mainly because of the upsize method FL from 23mm to 27mm in 12.5mp res. New firmware update fix a bit the excessive looks, resulting like the Pro+ version. Looks not too bad now. But yeah, Mate 30 still the king.

BigDisplay, 10 Jul 2020Yes it would be awesome, but i still dream about the good o... moreThe same for me, I'm still rooting 16:9 aspect ratio as it is still the gold standard aspect ratio for every single video I watch on YouTube and Netflix. I definitely much prefer a wider screen instead of a taller body. For me, 18:9 is definitely the best compromise for the smartphone screen aspect ratio and I don't mind embracing 18:9.

Shui8, 11 Jul 2020Oops. Another reason for not updating to Mate 40. Sigh. ... moreI'll be waiting to see the overall photo quality from the Mate 40 Pro. Last year's Mate 30 Pro was my absolute one and only favourite from Leica co-engineered Huawei flagships because I see almost or no excessive oversharpening or noise reduction at all. The current P40 Pro is a total letdown for me despite using the same chipset with the same ISP.

Oops. Another reason for not updating to Mate 40. Sigh.
I see no cutout on the screen protector. Is it pop up camera? Looks like they go all screen with Mate 40 series (starting Huawei Enjoy 20). Wonder how the Pro version opt as it has IP rating. First in-display front cam?

BigDisplay, 10 Jul 2020Yes it would be awesome, but i still dream about the good o... moreConsidering a 6" 16:9 ratio is the equivalent of nearly a 7" 18:9 one, I'd be fine with 6" if it means the REAL aspect ratio the majority of content is still streaming with.
I get Razer is taking another year of break because of the lack of 5G everywhere but man do I wish they reveal a phone with MediaTek's G90 (maybe a custom-made one that takes the Dolby Vision codecs and UFS 3.0) for a cheap price. They're the only brand keeping that ratio...

Yes Huawei make it curved without volume rocker again. And while you are at it also get rid of a power button (noone needs that ugly rectangle) before Apple beats you to the punch and call it the biggest innovation since the original iPhone :)

According to a designer from one of the phone-makers, the future flat-screen will be a mini-curved near-flat screen, achieved using a curved OLED panel. Such a near-flat mini-curved screen will function essentially like a flat-screen but still give the illusion of a curved screen. The aesthetic appeal of a curved screen is simply too strong to ignore, and the traditional flat-screen (with thick 4-side black-frame around the screen) is simply too cheap-looking to continue.

Dometalican, 10 Jul 2020You and me both. A Mate 40 X with more LTE/5G bands, FLAT 7... moreYes it would be awesome, but i still dream about the good old 6,8-7 inch 16:9 ratio, but it will not happen the next couple years.
