Only Symbian could manage to do some of the Android basic stuff. And if we talk about fragmentation, let's see the two incompatible branches of WP (WP8 and non-WP8), or the fact that only the iPhone 4S and the new iPad enjoy the full iOS 6, while the others were left with a 5.5 version, a la WP 7.8 style or value pack for some Android devices. Too bad Symbian -perhaps the least fragmented of them all since really old devices can run Belle FP2- is under an announced death sentence.
I don't like fragmentation, but it seems to be a commonplace in every platform today. So if you don't like it, you could get a Nexus device than unlike Apple's, MS's and the rest of Androids gets every new feature available on the next gen OS.

If Google wants to increase the percentage of Android ICS and JB, they must make Lite versions of it. Where the Lite versions will only focus on minor bugs and battery issues. Because there's a lot of smartphones that just runs about 600MHz-800MHz and couldn't update to the latest OS because of hardware incompatibility. In that case, those who doesnt care about OS updates will have small percentage.
I suggest ICS Lite: Android 4.0.0
while JB Lite: Android 4.0.8 or 4.0.9

The reason why more android units are still on Gingerbread is that, ICS updates is still not available on Low End and Mid range Android Devices. Even with other High End android device, ICS is not yer available. Seconly, ICS on other devices are unstable, un expected Lags and Force Close like on Galaxy S2 even on Galaxy S3. Features like using Maps even the unit is not online was remove on ICS, even using Static IP was remove on S2 using ICS.

Unsurprisingly, not everyone update OS, and not everyone upgrade their phone too with every new phone release.

Long live the Android fragmentation! :)) ... where nobody knows what OS they're running but it doesn't matter because they all look the same... Old and choppy. You really need a quad-core CPU to slide the desktops filled with 4-5 icons in a laggy fashion. :P

androids problem is not the software, its the upgrade adoption rate. how many joe publics see a software upgrade come up on the phone and just cancel it as they dont think they need it. or think its too complicated for them to do.

Who c... moreAgree, from version 2.2 Android have what I need.
Having two Androids in the family.
A Xperia Mini Pro, that won't be upgraded coz we wanna keep it as a SonyEricsson and not a Sony device.
My own Desire HD will probably get ICS upgraded. but then I might change my mind.

My SGS2 will get the JB update the same way it got ICS 6 months before Samsung released it (www.xda-developers.com).
